This dedicated team operates from the Network Operations Center, or NOC, situated just outside of Chicago. It serves as a 24/7 command hub with specialists overseeing nearly 5,000 flights each day.
The NOC employs over 2,000 professionals across 26 departments, including flight dispatch, crew scheduling, meteorology, and aircraft maintenance coordination.

“What you see in front of you is really where our global operations are controlled,” states Harel Magaritz, managing director of NOC daily operations, during a recent guided tour of the facility.

During busy days, Polderman reveals, they may experience two or three hubs dealing with thunderstorm activity concurrently. This reality keeps the weather forecasting team extremely busy.
Daily operations begin with two forecasters overnight, ramping up to four meteorologists throughout the daytime. The forecasts created by the weather team are crucial for flight dispatchers who ultimately determine the fate of each flight.
Polderman identifies the various factors that could affect flight safety. He mentions turbulence, icing, adverse weather at the destination airport, and any other conditions that could jeopardize a flight’s safety.
With this information in hand, dispatchers collaborate closely with the meteorology team to coordinate safe and efficient operations.
