Former UFC fighter Ben Askren has made a remarkable recovery following a double lung transplant necessitated by severe pneumonia. On Tuesday, Askren shared the news of his hospital release, marking a significant milestone in his health journey.
The 40-year-old fighter documented his experience through a heartfelt video update recorded from his vehicle. His wife, Amy, drove them home as Askren reflected on his struggles and triumphs along the way.
During an emotional segment titled “day 59,” Askren revealed that he lost around 50 pounds during his hospitalization. The gravity of his condition brought him perilously close to death, a truth he faced candidly.
“I’m out, with my beautiful wife. Supportive. Man, that was a long journey, and it’s not over because I still can’t really walk,” Askren said in the video. He noted the arduous nature of his recovery process and acknowledged the importance of relearning basic movements. His frankness about the ordeal speaks volumes about his resilience.
As his wife Amy looked on, she confirmed the chilling reality of their situation, stating, “Too close. A few times.” The discussions between the couple highlight the emotional toll that Ben’s medical crisis took on their family.
Askren expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support he received throughout his ordeal. He credited his friends and loved ones for providing emotional and practical assistance. He stated, “The support you guys gave me, whether it was sending a GoFundMe, helping my kids and wife get through it – I had friends from all over the country come to visit and hang out for a couple of days – it meant so much.”
This sense of community and connection proved vital to Askren’s recovery. He mentioned that positive messages and encouragement from fans and followers also played a central role in his fight against illness. He added, “It was so great to just have all this support and love, and hopefully I’m not in this situation again for a really, really long time. I plan on living a while.”
Previously, Askren described his experience as surreal, likening it to a movie. He shared, “I didn’t remember anything from May 28 to July 2.” He further noted the surreal nature of his health scare, saying, “I only died four times, where the ticker stopped for about 20 seconds.”
Reflecting on his dual-lung transplant, Askren remarked on his journey of recovery. He shared, “But I got the double lung transplant. I made it out to the other side of it. Gaining quite a bit of strength. Learning to use everything again.” In speaking about his weight, he noted, “I was on the scale yesterday, 147 pounds. I haven’t been 147 pounds since I was 15 years old.”
Amy Askren had earlier requested prayers as her husband awaited a lung donor. With his hospital stay now behind him, Askren has signed with Real American Freestyle, a venture associated with wrestling icon Hulk Hogan aiming to elevate the profile of professional freestyle wrestling.
Ben Askren is a decorated athlete, having clinched the NCAA championship in the 170-pound division in both 2006 and 2007. In addition, he represented Team USA at the 2008 Olympics and won gold medals at prestigious events like the Pan American Championships in 2005 and the World Championships in 2009.
Transitioning fully into mixed martial arts, Askren made his professional debut in Bellator in 2010. He showcased his skills in ONE Championship before making his mark in the UFC.
During his UFC tenure, Askren competed against notable fighters, securing a victory over Robbie Lawler via submission at UFC 235. However, he faced a setback against Jorge Masvidal. In a recent boxing match with YouTube star Jake Paul, Askren was knocked out in the first round, marking a controversial point in his career.
As Askren continues his recovery and prepares for new undertakings, his journey resonates as a testament to determination in the face of life-changing adversity. His experiences underscore the importance of support systems and the resilience found within personal trials.
