Former President Bill Clinton urged President Donald Trump to take proactive measures to reduce tensions in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran during his recent appearance on The Daily Show.
As the situation unfolds, the United States has refrained from direct military involvement in this crisis. However, U.S. forces have supported Israel by intercepting missiles launched from Iran. Despite this support, rumors suggest that the Trump administration may consider more direct engagement in the conflict.
During the interview, Clinton expressed doubts about the intentions of both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump concerning peace efforts in the Middle East. Clinton remarked, “First of all, they are not actively seeking to negotiate peace in the Middle East because the Israelis under Prime Minister Netanyahu have shown no willingness to grant the Palestinians statehood. The Palestinians, meanwhile, are too fractured and oppressed to unite for this cause.”
He went on to assert that both leaders might share a belief that Palestinians should not have an independent state. Yet, they both seem hesitant to provoke a large-scale regional conflict.
In a candid assessment, Clinton stated, “Mr. Netanyahu has long desired to confront Iran as a means to secure his position in power indefinitely. He has been in office for most of the past two decades. However, I believe our focus should be on defusing tensions, and I hope President Trump will prioritize this.”

He emphasized, “We must reassure our allies in the Middle East that we will support and protect them. Clinton acknowledged that it is crucial for the U.S. to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, yet he reiterated the need to minimize civilian casualties in the region.
“Do I believe we need to take steps to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities? Absolutely. But we must avoid the tragic loss of lives of civilians who are simply seeking to live in peace and security,” he declared.
