The remarkable response of four “band dads” averted a potential disaster at a Texas high school band competition. Their quick actions led to the apprehension of an elderly shooter who opened fire during the event.
According to the Pasadena Police Department, 83-year-old Dennis Brandl has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the incident. On Sunday evening, Brandl allegedly entered the auditorium of a local high school, armed with a handgun.
Officials reported that Brandl fired two shots, with one bullet hitting a door and another striking a 26-year-old percussion consultant in the shoulder.
The unnamed victim was taken to a Houston hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery. Fortunately, he never lost consciousness after the incident, highlighting the situation’s severity.
In a testament to courage, after the shots were fired, Brandl was swiftly tackled by attendees at the event. Pasadena ISD police, along with several good Samaritans, jumped into action, effectively subduing the alleged shooter.
Among the heroes were Air Force veteran Abram Trevino, Army veteran Adam Curow, Marine veteran Efrain (Polo) Castillo, and Houston Police Department Sgt. Joe Sanchez. Their military backgrounds undoubtedly contributed to their effective response under pressure.
“As soon as we heard the gunshots, Joe and I exchanged glances and rushed towards the commotion,” recalled Curow, highlighting the shared instinct to protect. “By the time we entered, Polo and Abram were right behind us ready to help.”
With teamwork, they managed to disarm Brandl. “I held his arms while Adam removed the gun. We fashioned a makeshift handcuff with my belt to secure him until law enforcement arrived,” explained Sanchez.
The Pasadena Police Department praised the actions of those involved, labeling them as heroic. In a statement, they expressed gratitude for the brave individuals who intervened, potentially saving lives.
“We are thankful for the brave citizens who courageously stepped up to detain the shooter,” the police stated on their official Facebook page.
Additionally, the Houston Police Department recognized the efforts of Sgt. Sanchez, commending his swift action during such a dangerous incident. “When danger struck, Sgt. Sanchez didn’t hesitate to act. We appreciate his service,” their statement noted.
Authorities reported that Brandl had no connection to the band competition. Investigators are probing why he was present on campus and what prompted his actions. Brandl claimed in custody that he believed someone was pursuing him and that both he and his wife were in danger.
Currently, he remains in custody without bond as the investigation continues.
In the aftermath of this startling event, Pasadena Independent School District Superintendent DeeAnn Powell expressed pride in the staff, local police, and community members. “I am grateful that no further harm occurred, thanks to the quick actions of our team,” Powell remarked.
The collaboration among parents, law enforcement, and the community proved essential in handling this crisis, solidifying a shared commitment to safety and protection.
