As the global tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump take effect, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva firmly opposes negotiating with the United States. Lula has consistently criticized these tariffs, viewing them as a means of coercion rather than fair trade measures.
In a recent interview, Lula expressed his willingness to engage in discussions if the conditions were suitable. He stated, “The day my intuition tells me that Trump is ready to talk, I won’t hesitate to call him. But today my intuition suggests he doesn’t want to talk, and I won’t humiliate myself.” Lula’s remarks reflect a strong stance against what he perceives as unfair economic practices.
Shortly after midnight on Thursday, more than 60 countries, including members of the European Union, found themselves facing new U.S. tariffs. The baseline tariff rate stands at 10%, but Brazil faces additional penalties, pushing the total tariff on its exports to as high as 50%. Such measures have provoked extensive backlash from Brazilian officials, with Lula previously condemning Trump’s tariffs as “unacceptable blackmail.”
Following the announcement of an aggressive 40% tariff on Brazil, Trump indicated that Lula could reach out to him at any time for dialogue. However, Lula appeared to subtly rebuff this invitation on social media, asserting that Brazil remains open to discussions but prioritizing national interests.
Lula emphasized that the future direction of Brazil’s economy rests solely with its own people and institutions. He stated, “At this moment, we are focused on protecting our economy, businesses, and workers, while responding to the U.S. government’s tariff measures.”
The discord between Trump and Lula transcends economic issues and reflects deeper political tensions. The Biden administration has been vocal about its discontent with Lula’s treatment of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro.
