Breakthrough Satellite Technology Set to Transform Wildfire Detection

Introducing FireSat: A New Era for Wildfire Detection

Its ambitious goal is to identify fires as small as 270 square feet, roughly equivalent to the area of a classroom, within just 20 minutes of their ignition. Additionally, it can detect blazes spanning two to three acres, comparable to two football fields.

The FireSat constellation, set to comprise more than 50 satellites upon its launch, features state-of-the-art six-band multispectral infrared cameras. These cameras are designed to capture detailed images, enabling machine learning algorithms to differentiate between genuine wildfires and misleading images like smokestacks.

Google Research, alongside satellite manufacturer Muon Space, is a founding member of the Earth Fire Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the FireSat initiative. Significant funding for the first satellite has come from the AI Collaboratives: Wildfires program, backed by Google.org. This initiative brings together nonprofits, academic institutions, government bodies, and corporations, all focused on harnessing AI to mitigate the severe impacts of wildfires.

As part of this collaborative effort, Google.org contributed $13 million to support the deployment of FireSat’s first satellite.
