NASHVILLE — The atmosphere at Bridgestone Arena during Stampede Days is nothing short of electrifying. Fans packed the venue as world-class athletes faced off against nearly 2-ton bucking bulls. However, one individual stood out in transforming the event into an unforgettable experience—Brinson James.
While many might refer to him as a rodeo clown, James transcends that label. The Professional Bull Riding (PBR) organization distinguishes itself from traditional rodeos; it focuses on athleticism rather than mere entertainment. In this landscape, Brinson James has carved out his niche as an entertainer and hype man.
In a recent interview, James expressed his passion for his role, stating, “It’s the best job, for sure, it’s the best job. A bull rider once told me that when the crowd screams, it feels like they could ride any bull that they load up. My job is to get the crowd to scream, to hype them up, and to demonstrate that this is the best show on dirt. We’re gonna have fun no matter what, party. So, I’m just making sure — if you’re 2, 22, or 102 — you’re having fun here at the PBR.”
Originally from Florida, Brinson James was born into the world of rodeo. His father, known as “Hollywood” Harris, has entertained crowds as a rodeo clown for nearly four decades. The duo performed together, captivating audiences with their father-son act nationwide.
Reflecting on his childhood, James recalled, “All growing up, I was Boogerhead. That was my rodeo clown name. It was Hollywood and Boogerhead. For 18 years, we traveled the country, attending various rodeos and PBR events, even making trips up into Canada.”
The fond memories of those days bring a smile to his face as he remembers, “Nobody knows who ‘Brinson James’ is in Florida. Everybody there calls me Boogerhead. I love it. That’s my name for sure.”
The bond with his father has always been a source of inspiration. Brinson’s father took part in the PBR World Finals in 1994, making a significant mark on his life. James reminisced, “I grew up staring at my dad’s World Finals buckle. My dad performed here as the entertainer just before legendary barrelman Flint Rasmussen, so I looked up to him my whole life. That’s been my dream since I was 10 or 11 years old.”
Brinson James fulfilled that dream in a remarkable fashion last year when he earned his own coveted buckle at just 30 years old. His journey into performance began early, as he joined his father on stage by the age of 12. By 17, he had the opportunity to run the show on his own.
“In 2012, PBR Canada hired my dad and me to handle their events. Richard Jones, our music director at the time, had seen my dad’s work countless times and wanted us as a team. Unfortunately, my dad had a broken leg and couldn’t make it. He encouraged Richard, saying he believed I was ready for this opportunity,” James explained. This decisive moment marked the beginning of his career as a solo entertainer.
Transitioning from “Boogerhead the Rodeo Clown” to one of PBR’s top entertainers demanded significant adjustments. James articulated the distinction between a rodeo clown and a PBR entertainer, emphasizing the need to adapt quickly to meet the expectations of the audience.
Now at 31, James has ticked every box on his entertainer’s bucket list. His accomplishments range from debuting at the PBR World Finals to performing across North America and crafting his own unique identity in a storied family legacy. Even his dogs have made a mark, contributing to the show with impressive frisbee tricks and barrel climbs, endearing them to audiences and enhancing the overall entertainment.
For Brinson, nothing compares to the thrill of engaging with the audience. He shared, “It’s the crowd. I love the electricity of the crowd when they really react. Here in Nashville, these people want to party. It doesn’t matter what show it is… they want to scream, they want to party, they want to have fun. So, my favorite part is to walk out there, ask the crowd to do something fun, and see them react. It’s exhilarating to join in their enthusiasm.”
When asked about the significance of his career, James is quick to respond. “It’s definitely the only job I ever had, and probably the only job I ever will have. This is amazing.”
Brinson James exemplifies the spirit of entertainment, seamlessly bridging the past with the present. Through his energetic performances, he honors the family legacy while carving out his own path. His passion continues to inspire both young and old, proving that the excitement of PBR and the joy of connecting with the crowd will never fade.
In Nashville and beyond, Brinson James stands as a beacon of energy, inviting everyone to join the celebration of Professional Bull Riding. Each performance not only showcases incredible athletic feats but also ignites a shared experience that resonates with fans.
