The mayor of Broadview, a small village on the outskirts of Chicago, strongly opposed the deployment of National Guard troops to the area during a press conference on Tuesday. This statement came after weeks of escalating protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, showcasing a local community’s desire for self-governance in the face of federal intervention.

Katrina Thompson, who leads the village with a population of less than 8,000, asserted, “We don’t want them here.” Her comments reflect a significant sentiment among local leaders who believe they are capable of managing the situation independently.

In an interview with WLS-TV, Thompson elaborated on her stance, expressing confidence in her community’s ability to self-govern. “We don’t need them. We can govern ourselves, and we have been doing that until this point,” she stated. This defiance follows recent remarks from President Donald Trump, suggesting that the Chicago area might benefit from an increased National Guard presence.

Trump, during a meeting with senior military officers at Marine Corps Base Quantico, expressed intentions to deploy National Guard units, claiming they would be “going into Chicago very soon.” This statement has sparked concern among local officials, particularly in Broadview.

Protests and Community Dynamics

Broadview has experienced a series of protests related to ICE activities. While tensions have been evident, Thompson maintains that the protesters have generally remained peaceful. “They mostly lobbed verbal insults at agents,” she remarked, referring to the clashes with ICE that resulted in arrests. “That happens to me all the time, and I don’t go out and throw tear gas on people,” she added, highlighting her belief in de-escalation over confrontation.
