Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam recently opened up about the team’s surprising decision to draft quarterback Shedeur Sanders during the NFL Draft in April. Haslam revealed that the franchise had not initially intended to select Sanders, who had become a controversial figure among draft prospects.
According to Haslam, the team’s plans shifted dramatically after Sanders unexpectedly fell out of the early rounds. This change of heart occurred the day before the final draft round, following critical discussions among the organization’s leadership.
“If you had told me Friday night, Day 2 of the NFL Draft, ‘Y’all are gonna pick Shedeur,’ I would have said, ‘That’s not happening,'” Haslam explained in a press conference. “But we had a conversation early that morning, and later that day, with the right people involved in that discussion.”
Ultimately, general manager Andrew Berry was instrumental in the decision-making process. Haslam emphasized that drafting Sanders was entirely Berry’s call, distinguished from other coaching decisions like player roles or game strategies.
“At the end of the day, that’s Andrew Berry’s call. He made the decision to draft Shedeur. Just like who’s gonna start or what play we’re gonna call is [head coach] Kevin [Stefanski]’s call. But that’s Andrew’s decision,” Haslam said.
Shedeur Sanders, coming off a noteworthy college football season, faced high expectations from experts who projected him as a potential top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, his fall to the Browns’ selection at the 144th pick raised eyebrows across the league.
Berry clarified that selecting a second quarterback was not part of the original plan. The team had already drafted Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel earlier in the process.
“It wasn’t necessarily the plan going into the weekend to select two quarterbacks,” Berry noted after the selection. “However, we believe in best player available and understanding positional value. We did not expect Sanders to be available in the fifth round.”
Berry expressed confidence in fostering competition, saying, “We love adding competition to every position room. Adding him to compete with the other guys already on the roster was the right move.”
Despite the excitement of the draft, Sanders’ early days with the Browns have not been without controversy. Recently, he was cited for two speeding violations, leading to significant media attention and concern from fans.
Sanders received his first ticket for driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. Only two weeks later, he was ticketed again for speeding at 101 mph in a 60 mph zone. Compounding his troubles, he failed to appear in court regarding these citations.
Addressing his speeding incidents, Sanders spoke at teammate David Njoku’s charity softball game last month. “I made some wrong choices personally, and I can own up to them,” he stated. “I made some not great choices… I learned.”
General manager Berry did not shy away from addressing the situation, stating that Sanders’ actions were unwise. “Not smart. Just not smart,” Berry remarked. He added that the organization has had discussions with Sanders about the implications of his behavior.
Berry emphasized the seriousness of road safety, stating, “It’s not just about yourself. It’s not just about having a joyride, but you could injure other people. A deer or something could cut in front of you, and your reaction time—it’s just dangerous.”
The Browns are optimistic about Sanders’ potential despite the rocky start. With guidance from experienced team members and leaders, Sanders has the opportunity to develop into a key player. His skill set and past performance suggest that he could make significant contributions to the team moving forward.
The decision to select Sanders underscores the unpredictability of the NFL Draft. Teams are often forced to adjust their strategies based on the evolving landscape of player availability and talent assessment.
As the Browns prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Sanders and the impact his presence has on the team’s dynamic. While his early speed-related controversies raised concerns, the organization remains hopeful that he can turn a corner both on and off the field.
The journey for Shedeur Sanders is just beginning. With expectations mounted and challenges to overcome, he must navigate the complexities of being a professional athlete. Time will tell if he can live up to the potential that excited the Browns to draft him.
In the coming weeks, fans will eagerly await to see how Sanders develops under the Browns’ coaching staff and how he contributes to their pursuit of success in the upcoming NFL season.
