The Carolina Panthers had high hopes for Bryce Young as he entered his sophomore season in 2024, but the beginning was far from ideal.

Similar to his challenging rookie year in 2023, Young struggled to find a rhythm within the Panthers’ offense, leaving many to wonder if this year would be another disappointment. After just two games, head coach Dave Canales made the pivotal decision to bench Young in favor of veteran quarterback Andy Dalton.

This transition put Young at a crossroads. He faced a choice: succumb to disappointment or channel his energy into improvement. He selected the latter, demonstrating his commitment and perseverance.

Despite the Panthers finishing with a disappointing 5-12 record last season, Young’s performance in the latter half ignited excitement among fans and former players alike, particularly Greg Olsen, a renowned Panthers legend.

Resilience Amid Setbacks

Greg Olsen expressed his enthusiasm for Young’s development while attending the fifth edition of Tight End University, an event he co-founded alongside fellow NFL stars Travis Kelce and George Kittle. Olsen stated, “It was just great for the entire organization for Bryce to take that leap after some early adversity. For him to respond says a lot about him.”

Reflecting on the importance of a reliable quarterback, Olsen added, “If you don’t have the quarterback position right, everything else becomes really challenging.”

The Challenges of Transitioning to the NFL

The Panthers selected Young as the number one overall pick from Alabama, following a Heisman-winning campaign. However, his transition into the NFL has not unfolded as anticipated, yet Young remained undeterred.

Throughout the season, he embraced challenges and leaned on his faith, which ultimately paid off. Young regained his starting position in Week 8 and maintained it for the rest of the season.

Impressive Statistics

In those remaining games, while the Panthers concluded with a 3-6 record, Young accumulated 1,853 passing yards, delivered 12 touchdowns against six interceptions, and achieved a 60.4% completion rate. Projecting these averages over a full 17-game season would have resulted in approximately 3,500 passing yards and 23 touchdowns, while limiting interceptions to 11.

In Young’s final three games, he threw for a total of 612 yards, averaged 204 yards per game, and notably achieved seven touchdowns without any interceptions.

Olsen remarked, “I think Bryce really showed his true colors last year, and that was really impressive.”

Strengthening the Team Around Young

Looking ahead, Olsen believes the Panthers need to continue building the roster around Young. This sentiment aligns with the organization’s efforts to bolster their offensive capabilities. In the recent draft, Carolina selected Tetairoa McMillan from Arizona, a receiver with the potential to become a key player alongside veterans Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette.

Additionally, the Panthers are hopeful that Hunter Renfrow can replicate past success. Renfrow, known for his exceptional route-running and dependable hands, previously shined as a target for the Las Vegas Raiders.
