Authorities in California are scrutinizing the statements of a mother following the mysterious disappearance of her 7-month-old son. Discrepancies have raised significant concerns regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction.
On August 16, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department revealed that inconsistencies were detected in the account provided by Rebecca Haro, the mother of the missing infant, Emmanuel. These inconsistencies surfaced during her initial interview with investigators regarding the alleged events of August 14.
The Sheriff’s Department reported, “During questioning, multiple individuals, including the child’s parents Jake and Rebecca Haro, were interviewed. Notably, inconsistencies were observed in Rebecca’s original statement, leading her to discontinue the interview process.” This unexpected turn of events has raised alarms about the potential involvement of foul play in Emmanuel’s disappearance.
The investigation began when deputies responded to a report of a missing infant around 7:47 PM on August 14. According to Rebecca Haro, she was assaulted outside a retail establishment and her baby was snatched during the attack.
In an official post on social media, authorities elaborated on the situation: “Investigators from our Specialized Investigations Division are continuing to probe the reported kidnapping of a seven-month-old after the child’s mother claimed to have been attacked near a store on Yucaipa Boulevard last night. K9 scent-tracking dogs were deployed to search for the child, but unfortunately, no trace was found. Additionally, no suspect information is available at this time.”
According to multiple news reports, Rebecca Haro stated that she had taken her children to a football practice with her husband before visiting a local Big 5 Sporting Goods store to purchase a mouthguard. In her account, she noted that she realized Emmanuel required a diaper change after someone addressed her in Spanish, at which point everything went “blank.”
Upon further questioning, Rebecca claimed to have searched her vehicle, requested assistance inside the store, and subsequently called 911. However, investigators reported numerous striking inconsistencies in her narrative.
Authorities later confirmed that there was no surveillance footage capturing the events during the incident, leading to the decision not to issue an Amber Alert. This decision stemmed from insufficient details about a suspect or vehicle that would typically be required for an alert.
The parents of the missing child have also faced scrutiny for their level of cooperation with law enforcement. Officials indicated that Jake and Rebecca Haro have not fully engaged with investigators and have chosen not to continue discussions.
The case has polarized public opinion and attracted attention from several advocacy organizations, including the Uvalde Foundation for Kids. Initially, the foundation offered a reward of $5,000 for information leading to Emmanuel’s recovery. However, they retracted this reward less than a day later. Daniel Chapin, the foundation’s founder, expressed his concerns in a statement: “We cannot, in good conscience, utilize our team and resources when so much is missing in this case. The inconsistencies surrounding the mother’s claims and her abrupt decision to halt communication with both law enforcement and our organization are particularly troubling.”
Chapin also posed a poignant question, “What parent would behave in such a manner if their child were missing?” The foundation remains hopeful that law enforcement will diligently pursue the case until Emmanuel is found safe.
In terms of physical description, deputies stated that the missing infant was last seen wearing a black Nike onesie. Emmanuel weighs approximately 21 pounds, stands around 24 inches tall, has brown eyes and brown hair, and is cross-eyed.
The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division remains actively engaged in the case, emphasizing their commitment to finding Emmanuel. They have urged anyone with relevant information to reach out at 909-890-4904.
This troubling case not only raises pressing questions about the integrity of the reported events but also highlights the urgency for the community to assist in locating the missing child. Authorities continue to encourage vigilance and cooperation as they try to untangle the intricate details of this mysterious disappearance.
