A coffee shop in California has found itself flooded with enthusiastic supporters following a controversial public stance in honor of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA.
Invita Café, located in Rancho Santa Fe, attracted significant attention after placing commemorative stickers on its coffee cups to pay tribute to Kirk after his assassination. Owner Sara De Luca expressed her surprise at the overwhelming public response.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, De Luca shared that she took immediate action by adding the stickers to coffee cups starting the Friday after Kirk’s tragic death. She noted that this wasn’t the first time her café had stood in solidarity with a cause. When conflict arose in Israel, the café displayed stickers supporting the Israel Defense Forces.
De Luca recalled her personal connection with Kirk: “We had hosted him. We had met him. We’ve met Erika,” referring to Kirk’s wife. Despite the backlash, she expressed that she had not anticipated any controversy stemming from her decision to honor a presumed victim.
In the wake of the backlash, De Luca described receiving numerous calls with harsh criticisms directed at her business. She decided to print white round stickers emblazoned with phrases like “Thank you, Charlie Kirk” and “We Love You.” However, she soon found that the café’s Google and Yelp pages were bombarded with one-star reviews, causing her to temporarily shut them down.
What kept her grounded during this tumultuous time was the support from her church, Awaken, and her local community. De Luca emotionally recounted how touched she felt when supporters rallied around her. Sales at Invita Café skyrocketed, surging by over 300 percent as patrons, whom she described as “righteous people,” came forward to show their support.
Lines soon wrapped around the block, with customers waiting 30 to 45 minutes to enter the bustling coffee shop. De Luca revealed that the overwhelming turnout was solely from supporters, emphasizing that there were no detractors present during this surge in patronage. “It was only the righteous showing up,” she stated, affirming that all who came expressed gratitude for her actions.
The outpouring of support extended well beyond her immediate community. She shared stories of patrons from various states, including Georgia, who offered financial help for the café, including one individual who gifted $500 to fund the next hundred drinks. Another customer anonymously deposited $300 before leaving, highlighting the nationwide support for her café.
Invita Café opened its doors nine years ago, inspired by De Luca’s Italian heritage. She aimed to create an inviting space where the aroma of freshly brewed espresso could foster connections among patrons, celebrating the community and traditions she cherished. The café has remained a social hub, embodying a spirit of unity.
While reflecting on the recent events, De Luca expressed a spiritual belief that the surge of support is divinely inspired. She articulated a sense of fervor, stating, “This is insane. But I think Charlie would have been proud.”
Today, Invita Café still carries the commemorative stickers and continues to host community events. It recently welcomed Turning Point USA for a pop-up event, reinforcing its commitment to fostering dialogue and community support.
As De Luca reflects on the recent surge in business and support from across the nation, she remains dedicated to her mission of creating a welcoming atmosphere for all. The café has once again become a pillar of the community, demonstrating how collective action and solidarity can lead to unexpected positivity amidst controversy.
In this environment, Invita Café continues to welcome local residents and visitors alike, determined to share not just coffee, but a message of hope and unity in the face of adversity. With a renewed sense of community strength, Sara De Luca is optimistic about what the future holds for her establishment, proving that sometimes, a cup of coffee can bring people together in profound ways.
