California Governor Newsom Vows to Prosecute Violent Rioters and Criticizes Trump’s Tactics

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a member of the Democratic Party, spoke firmly on Tuesday about the prosecution of anti-ICE protesters who resorted to violence during recent demonstrations. Newsom’s remarks came amid his condemnation of President Donald Trump’s alleged misuse of power in deploying federal troops to counteract protests.

During a news conference, Governor Newsom highlighted that 220 individuals have been arrested in connection with the riots in Los Angeles. He emphasized the importance of reviewing surveillance footage to build additional cases against those involved in the unrest.

Newsom expressed gratitude towards those who participated in peaceful protests against ICE raids and deportations targeting migrant workers. He stressed that peaceful assembly contrasts sharply with the approach taken by Trump, who he accused of favoring escalation and theatrics over the prioritization of public safety.

Escalation of Tensions and Military Presence

In recent days, Newsom and Trump have exchanged verbal jabs regarding the latter’s decision to send thousands of National Guard troops and active-duty Marines to Los Angeles. The governor articulated concerns that this military presence undermines state sovereignty and squanders essential resources, arguing that it exacerbates the already tense situation. Conversely, Trump maintains that his decisions are necessary to restore order.

“These are men and women trained for foreign combat, not for domestic law enforcement,” Newsom stated. He added that while the service and bravery of these troops are commendable, there is an urgent need to resist the militarization of local streets. Newsom’s frustration was evident as he remarked on the unsettling sight of unmarked military vehicles in school parking lots, instilling fear among students preparing for graduation.

Impact on Local Communities

Continuing his critique, Newsom accused Trump of deploying a military dragnet throughout Los Angeles that goes well beyond targeting serious criminals. He claimed that federal agents have been arresting individuals such as dishwashers, gardeners, and seamstresses, which he described as a form of weakness masquerading as strength. Newsom asserted that the federal government is not protecting communities but traumatizing them, suggesting that this approach seems intentional.

On Sunday, Newsom sent a letter to the Trump administration, calling for the withdrawal of National Guard troops and their return to state control. In addition, the state has filed a lawsuit challenging the federal deployment of military forces.
