In a bold move that underscores his commitment to public safety, a seasoned lawman with over 30 years of experience is leveraging unique crime-fighting strategies as he plunges into California’s gubernatorial race. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is determined to challenge the status quo and reshape the state’s approach to crime.

Understanding the dire circumstances facing California, Sheriff Bianco articulated his unconventional philosophy. He stated, “I’m not about doing the norm. I’m not about doing what we’ve always done. It’s about pushing the limits for a reason and for the right reason,” in an interview with Fox News Digital.

The Republican sheriff, a supporter of President Donald Trump’s upcoming election campaign, recently announced his intention to run for governor in the 2026 election. He aims to succeed the term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Bianco firmly placed the blame for California’s current struggles at the feet of Democrat officials. He criticized their policies, claiming they have led to rampant crime, soaring taxes, exorbitant living costs, widespread tent encampments, increasing fentanyl deaths, devastating wildfires, and a broken home insurance market. His conclusion was clear: Californians deserve better.

Implementing Lessons from Reality Television

Bianco reflects on a significant moment in his early career that set the stage for his innovative policing strategies. In 2006, he collaborated with Dateline to create the first law enforcement initiative that participated in the show “To Catch a Predator.” He shared, “I ended up working with Dateline to start the first law enforcement involvement in ‘To Catch a Predator.’ That became their biggest success in Dateline’s history. And that was us.”

The initiative saw law enforcement successfully arrest 51 individuals across Southern California within just three days, targeting those who preyed on children. This groundbreaking operation paved the way for over 100 similar projects nationwide over the following year, including one international operation in England.

Pioneering New Approaches in Law Enforcement

Bianco emphasized his commitment to doing the right thing, despite resistance from his administration. He stated, “It was all because I knew what the right thing to do was. I wasn’t happy with being told no just for the reason of, ‘well, that’s not how we do things.’” This mantra highlighted his dedication to pushing boundaries and seeking better results in law enforcement.

The sheriff also pointed out successes in Riverside County’s jail operations, highlighting their recognition by the state as a model for other correctional facilities. He expressed pride in the county’s efforts to benefit inmates beyond mere confinement.

Strategies That Reduce Crime Rates

According to Sheriff Bianco, his department’s approach contributes to lower crime rates compared to other areas in California. He credited these successes to a simple principle: allowing deputies to carry out their duties effectively.

He praised Riverside County District Attorney Michael Hestrin for his robust prosecution efforts, which have played a crucial role in removing criminals from the streets. Bianco elaborated, “I’m very lucky here in Riverside County to have a great district attorney. He believes if we put a good case together, that person responsible for that crime should be punished and held accountable.”

The sheriff noted that this accountable justice system is vital for deterring crime. He argued that without consequences, criminal behavior would continue unchecked.

Thriving Communities Amid Challenges

Despite ongoing challenges, Bianco reported an encouraging trend of businesses moving into Riverside County. He attributed this growth to the relatively safer environment created by proactive law enforcement. “I have businesses that are moving here. They know it’s safer for their business and their kids. We’re extremely proud of that,” he added.

Interestingly, Bianco noted that Riverside County has not faced the same recruitment challenges that plague many areas of the country. He explained, “We don’t have a recruitment problem here. We do have somewhat of a retention problem because we’re losing people to other states,” attributing this to California’s overall decline.

Political Backlash and Solutions Under Discussion

In response to Sheriff Bianco’s criticism, Newsom’s office announced plans to implement new public safety laws starting in 2025. A spokesperson emphasized that these laws aim to build on California’s existing strategies to combat crime and maintain nearly record-low crime rates.

In particular, Newsom’s measures include significant bipartisan efforts to address property and retail crime, alongside targeted operations by the California Highway Patrol aimed at curtailing organized crime and gang violence.

Confronting the Fentanyl Crisis

Amid these developments, Sheriff Bianco identified fentanyl as the most pressing drug issue facing Riverside County. He expressed concerns over the influx of fentanyl into California, stating, “The fact that we’ve had such an open border and the flood of fentanyl into the country, it’s infected every type of drug.”

Bianco indicated that the department is directing significant resources toward combating drug trafficking, particularly against cartels. However, he acknowledged struggles with retail theft and other crime trends that mirror challenges statewide.

A Call for Truth and Accountability

In his reflections, Bianco pointed to systemic failures in state governance as primary contributors to California’s declining state. He stressed that progressive policies have significantly impacted the state’s trajectory.

“I think we’re at a point in society where people are fed up and begging for someone they can trust,” he said. With his extensive law enforcement background, Bianco aims to foster accountability and a sense of trust among constituents. He concluded, “People can look to me and know that what I’m doing is in their best interests.”
