Cam Newton Calls Out College Football Programs After Major Halftime Brawl

Former NFL superstar Cam Newton voiced his concerns regarding the college football programs at Grambling State University and Bethune-Cookman University after a violent altercation erupted during a game over the weekend. In the latest episode of his podcast, Newton addressed the consequences of the melee that took place at halftime.

The aggressive confrontation led to the Southwestern Athletic Conference imposing suspensions on 27 players, with three athletes receiving two-game penalties. Both institutions also faced significant fines as a result of this incident.

On his podcast, entitled “4th & 1”, Newton remarked that such incidents negatively impact Historical Black Colleges and Universities, commonly referred to as HBCUs. He declared, “Regardless of whether you are in the MEAC, the SWAC, the SIAC, the OVC — if you represent Blackness and Black culture, you should look at this and say to yourself, ‘This set us back.'” His comments reflect a deep concern for the image of HBCUs amid ongoing efforts to enhance their standing through name, image, and likeness deals, as well as attracting sponsorships.

During the podcast, Newton critically pondered the implications had the brawl occurred during a nationally televised college football game. He questioned what type of discourse would have emerged from such an event and how it would affect public perception of HBCU football programs.

Newton expressed worries that the damage to these institutions’ images is particularly damaging at a time when they are striving to attract visibility and lucrative endorsements.

In addition to critiquing the schools and players involved, Newton addressed the remarks made by Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph. Initially, Joseph indicated that the school would not tolerate what he termed
