Carson Kelly Achieves Rare Feat as Cubs Player Hits for Cycle in Victory Over Athletics

In a stunning display of skill and determination, Chicago Cubs catcher Carson Kelly made history by hitting for the cycle during an overwhelming 18-3 victory over the Athletics at Sutter Health Park on Monday night. This remarkable achievement places Kelly squarely in the history books of MLB, being the first Cubs player in 32 years to accomplish this feat.

Outstanding Performance at the Plate

The 30-year-old Kelly had an outstanding night at the plate, showcasing his versatility as a batter. He began with a home run in the fourth inning, followed by a two-run single in the fifth. In the sixth inning, he added a double and also walked, building up to his epic eighth-inning moment.

Hurdles on the Road to a Cycle

Despite several near misses in games prior, Kelly understood the odds against him as he sought to hit for the cycle, a rare accomplishment that includes a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game. “I’ve been in this same position before where I needed a triple for the cycle. If anybody’s ever looked up my numbers, I have two triples, so odds are not in my favor, right?” Kelly said in the post-game interview.

Fastest Sprint to Glory

After realizing he needed a triple to complete the cycle, Kelly focused on making solid contact. “I didn’t get it done the first time. This time I was like, ‘Oh, I’m just going to put a good at-bat together.’ I hit it, then I reached first base and saw it ricochet. I was like, ‘Oh boy, this is it right here, I gotta go.’ That’s probably the fastest you’ll ever see me run,” he shared with enthusiasm.

A Breath of Fresh Air for Cubs Fans

The eighth-inning triple marked a significant milestone for both Kelly and the Cubs organization. He became the first player since Mark Grace, who last hit for the cycle on May 9, 1993, against the San Diego Padres. Additionally, he is the first Cubs catcher to achieve this since Randy Hundley’s accomplishment on August 11, 1966.

Honoring a Legend

In a nod to baseball history, Kelly expressed admiration for Mark Grace, reminiscing about their connection. “I know Mark Grace, too, in Arizona. I’ll have to hit him up,” he stated. “Pretty special. Great accomplishment. Something I never thought I would get. I’m just very fortunate and blessed. A lot of hard work, a lot of great teammates pumping me up. So, all in all, just a very special night.”

Joining the Elite Club

With this achievement, Kelly not only etched his name alongside Cubs legends but also joined an elite group of major leaguers. He became only the third player in MLB history to hit for the cycle and walk twice in the same game, sharing this honor with Joe Gordon of the New York Yankees in 1940 and Mickey Cochrane of the Philadelphia A’s in 1937.

Manager’s Surprise

While Kelly was aware that he was closing in on the cycle, his manager, Craig Counsell, was initially oblivious. “I didn’t realize he had a chance at a cycle, but when that ball kicked off the wall, the dugout started going crazy. So, I figured something was going on,” Counsell noted, emphasizing the rarity of such moments. “They’re fun days; they’re rare days and they’re once-in-a-lifetime-type days for players.”

Looking Ahead

The Cubs, now holding a 3-4 record, are scheduled to face the Athletics again at 10:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday in the second game of their three-game series. With the excitement of Kelly’s historic performance still resonating among fans and players alike, anticipation builds for the next chapter of this season.

This memorable game also showcased the camaraderie and support within the Cubs dugout, echoing the theme of teamwork and dedication that defines the sport. As Carson Kelly continues to delight Cubs fans, his achievement serves as a reminder of the magical moments baseball can create.
