A national Catholic organization is dedicated to providing Bibles to college students, aiming to support their faith journeys. This initiative comes at a time when a significant number of young people are distancing themselves from their religious roots.

According to a study highlighted by the Catholic evangelization organization Word on Fire, approximately 79 percent of former Catholics abandon their faith before reaching the age of twenty-three. This disturbing trend has prompted a proactive response to reconnect with this demographic during a pivotal transitional phase.

Brandon Vogt, senior publishing director for Bishop Robert Barron’s Word on Fire ministry, explained that most young adults who forfeit their Christian beliefs do so between high school and college. He remarked, “The vast majority of young people who leave their Christian faith do so around the high school to college age.”

Addressing the Challenge Head-On

In light of these alarming statistics, Vogt emphasized the importance of reaching out during this critical moment. He said, “If that’s when they’re leaving, then we need to go out there and meet them in that critical moment.” Over the years, Word on Fire has undertaken various initiatives, including releasing videos and books, but the current Bible distribution campaign stands out as a particularly effective method.

The organization has successfully provided over 30,000 copies of its Gospel edition to college campuses across the United States, extending even to one campus in Canada. This concerted effort seeks to bring the Scriptures directly to students, creating opportunities for spiritual engagement.

Artistry Meets Scripture

Vogt describes these unique Word on Fire editions of the Bible as works of art, noting their visual appeal. He stated, “With these Word on Fire editions of the Bible, which is not just the biblical text, it’s this work of art. We call it a ‘cathedral in print’ because it’s surrounded with artwork and quotes from saints, church fathers, mystics, and scholars.”

This approach aims to make the Bible more accessible and engaging for college students, particularly those approaching the text for the first time. Vogt noted, “It’s got a bunch of extra stuff around it that I think makes the Bible understandable to a college student, especially one approaching it for the first time.”

Funding the Initiative

On the initiative’s official webpage, Word on Fire has reported raising more than $184,000 of its $250,000 goal. This financial support is crucial for expanding their outreach to even more campuses in the future.

Vogt shared encouraging testimonials from individuals who have begun to explore the Bible for the first time due to this campaign. He commented, “We have countless testimonies of people who have begun reading the Bible for the first time in their lives as a result of this campaign, which for us is enormously encouraging.” Such positive feedback underscores the mission’s impact on youth spirituality and religious engagement.

Partnerships With Colleges

To facilitate this initiative, Word on Fire has partnered with numerous Catholic campus ministries at secular colleges. These collaborations enable the distribution of Bibles to students who may not have previously engaged with Scripture. Many recipients have expressed excitement, sharing experiences such as, “Wow, I’ve never read the Bible before. This is my first time.”

Notable institutions involved in this initiative include Harvard University, West Point, Stanford University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Southern Methodist University. These partnerships help establish a network of support for college students exploring their faith.

Vogt noted that the Word on Fire Bibles have inspired some individuals to explore Catholicism further. He stated, “People have said the Word on Fire Bibles have led to their becoming Catholic or returning to the church.” This suggests that the distribution of these editions is not merely about providing Scripture but also fostering a deeper spiritual connection.

Vogt also emphasized the need for Catholics to engage more rigorously with the Bible. He said, “I think Catholics can do a whole lot better reading the Bible. And that’s not a fault of the church. The church has been adamant for decades and centuries that Catholics need to know the scriptures on the ground.”

Despite the church’s efforts, there remains a gap in scriptural familiarity among parishioners. Vogt’s advocacy highlights the organization’s commitment to bridging that gap. “Is it happening as well as it should? Probably not. That’s why we’re on fire. So committed to bringing the Bible to new generations.”
