Bari Weiss, appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News, outlined her vision for the network following her acquisition by Paramount for $150 million. In her initial communication to the newsroom, Weiss emphasized the necessity of holding both Democrats and Republicans accountable in equal measure.

In her memo, Weiss acknowledged the legacy of the network while expressing enthusiasm for the future. She stated, “The opportunity to build on that legacy with you — and to renew it in an era that so desperately needs it — is an extraordinary privilege. Right now, I imagine you have some questions. Weiss further elaborated on her goals for the coming weeks, stating, “My aim is to familiarize myself with each of you. I wish to understand what works and what does not, as well as your perspectives on transforming CBS News into the most trusted news organization in America and beyond.” She assured the team that she would approach this endeavor with an open mind and a reporter’s diligence.

As she steps into her new role, Weiss highlighted ten essential journalistic principles, including the commitment to scrutinizing both American political parties equally.

Having departed from The New York Times in 2020, where she alleged bullying from colleagues, Weiss founded the “Common Sense” newsletter. This initiative evolved into The Free Press, which she successfully expanded into a complete media entity by 2022.

Amid the shifts within CBS News, David Ellison, the newly appointed CEO of Paramount, reinforced Weiss’s message in his own communication to employees. Ellison, who has taken on the leadership role following the merger with Skydance Media, urged the network to mitigate partisanship in its reporting.

He wrote in his memo, “If we are to move forward, we must find our way back to the ideals that shaped both our country and civilization itself: open exchange of ideas, vigorous yet respectful debate, and a genuine regard for the beliefs and traditions of others.”

Ellison also voiced concern over the media landscape, which often amplifies divisive rhetoric. He stated, “When we reduce each issue to ‘us versus them’ or ‘my way versus the wrong way,’ we restrict ourselves from listening, learning, and ultimately growing.” He admitted, “I do not have a definitive answer to this challenge, but it is clear that we all share the responsibility to play our roles.”

He articulated CBS’s mission as ensuring its platform remains a trusted source for truth and understanding, emphasizing engagement with facts.
