A World War II veteran recently celebrated his remarkable 100th birthday, marking the occasion with two joyous gatherings. John Fife, a former airman, looked back on his century of life, sharing secrets to longevity and emphasizing the importance of staying active.
Fife, who resides in Clevedon, North Somerset, in the U.K., turned 100 on December 26, 2024, as reported by news agency SWNS. His birthday festivities included a celebratory hotel event with family and friends, followed by a second gathering at Coleridge Court, a retirement development where he has resided since 2022.
Reflecting on a remarkable life, Fife mentioned that the smartphone stands out as one of the most significant inventions during his lifetime. He attributed part of his long, healthy life to advancements in technology and medicine, which he believes have profoundly impacted well-being.
Born and educated in Edinburgh, Scotland, Fife was called to serve in the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1943. He trained as a wireless operator and air gunner, serving diligently with Coastal Command Air/Sea Rescue until his demobilization in 1946.
After his military service, Fife entered the civil service, embarking on a career with the Post Office Savings Bank. He later contributed to establishing a new headquarters for the Savings Bank, which today operates as National Savings & Investments. His hard work earned him special recognition, including an audience with Queen Elizabeth II during her visit in 1970.
