A remarkable milestone was recently celebrated by John Fife, a veteran of World War II who turned 100 years old on December 26, 2024. This momentous occasion was marked by two festive birthday parties, allowing him to honor the special day in style.
Fife, a resident of Clevedon in North Somerset, U.K., reflected on significant advancements in technology during his century-long life. Among these, he emphasized the transformative impact of the smartphone, calling it one of the most notable inventions of our time.
Gathering with loved ones, Fife first celebrated with family and friends at a local hotel. The second celebration occurred in the lounge of Coleridge Court, a retirement living community where he currently resides. He expressed gratitude for the good health that enables him to enjoy these gatherings, stating, “I feel very fortunate that I still enjoy good health and am able to get out and about.”
Born in Edinburgh, Fife’s journey began in 1943 when he answered the call for national service with the Royal Air Force. He trained as a wireless operator and air gunner, serving with Coastal Command Air/Sea Rescue until his demobilization in 1946.
After his military service, Fife transitioned to a successful career in the civil service. He joined the Post Office Savings Bank, where he played a vital role in establishing a new headquarters for what is now known as National Savings & Investments following the separation from the Post Office. His contributions to this organization earned him recognition, culminating in a personal audience with Queen Elizabeth II in 1970.
Fife married, and he and his wife welcomed two sons into their family. In 1966, they relocated to Glasgow, paving the way for new opportunities and advancements in Fife’s career. After retiring from the Civil Service in 1984, he moved to Clevedon to be closer to his children.
Even at 100, Fife prioritizes staying active. He shares his daily routine, which often includes a purposeful goal like a long walk or attending church. Fife also enjoys engaging hobbies like completing jigsaw puzzles.
When asked for his insights into longevity, Fife offered straightforward advice:
