Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent conservative voice, has weighed in on the New York City mayoral race, urging Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee, to consider withdrawing. According to Kirk, the only way to thwart the Democratic nominee, Zohran Mamdani, is for the Republican Party to unify around a strong alternative candidate.
Last week’s surprising primary results revealed that Mamdani had decisively triumphed over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo through ranked-choice voting. As a result, many political strategists and financial backers are now focused on strategies that could prevent Mamdani, who is just 33 years old, from winning the November election. Interestingly, both Cuomo and current Mayor Eric Adams have pivoted to independent candidacies.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Kirk expressed his concerns regarding Sliwa’s campaign. “He seems more like a novelty candidate,” Kirk remarked. “While he is a decent individual, I believe he should step aside. The Republican side must not be divided.” Kirk emphasized the importance of rallying around a candidate who can effectively challenge Mamdani, particularly if that candidate ends up being Eric Adams, who, according to Kirk, is not particularly popular in New York at the moment.
Kirk stressed the need to run on issues that resonate with voters, highlighting crime, quality of life, and an anti-radical agenda. He argued that a common-sense strategy is necessary to unify the city and prevent extreme elements from gaining traction in what he described as America’s largest and once-greatest city.
In response to Kirk’s call for Sliwa to concede, the Sliwa campaign released a statement citing recent polling data from American Pulse. The poll indicated Sliwa slightly leading Eric Adams by 16% to 14% in a hypothetical four-way race, while Mamdani held a commanding 35% lead, followed by Cuomo at 29%. Notably, the poll indicated Adams having the lowest net favorability among the candidates at 68% unfavorable.
“Eric Adams paved the way for Zohran Mamdani by failing so completely over the past three and a half years. With Adams polling last and holding the worst favorability ratings ever, it’s evident that I’m the only candidate who can emerge victorious on November 4th. Why should I withdraw when Adams has no realistic path to victory?” Sliwa stated.
It’s worth noting that Sliwa was the Republican nominee in the 2021 mayoral race. He lost decisively to Adams, who was the Democratic nominee, receiving only 28% of the vote compared to Adams’ 67%.
Kirk also provided insights into what he sees as Mamdani’s weak points. He argued that Mamdani’s radical positions could alienate moderate voters. Despite acknowledging that some of Mamdani’s proposals, like freezing rent, might initially attract New Yorkers, Kirk emphasized that Mamdani’s track record on crime should be a focal point for his opponents. The candidate has been associated with the defund the police movement and has proposed establishing a Department of Community Safety.
“Crime is an issue that impacts every New Yorker,” Kirk remarked. “While rent stabilization might earn Mamdani some support, his stance on public safety is alarmingly poor. He is virtually opposed to the police, which is unacceptable.”
Another factor complicating Sliwa’s campaign is Mamdani’s strong social media presence. Kirk noted that Mamdani successfully harnessed social media during his primary campaign, attracting the attention of first-time voters and young people in New York City.
“Hundreds of thousands of college students are showing support for the candidate Kirk described as the encampment candidate,” Kirk asserted. Mamdani, as the Democratic nominee, enjoys an inherent advantage due to party loyalty in a city traditionally aligned with Democrats.
Kirk dismissed comments suggesting that New York City is beyond salvaging. He underscored the mayoral race’s significant implications for the future of the city and urged conservatives to mobilize against Mamdani’s candidacy. “Some people claim they do not care about New York City, but that attitude is misguided and harmful,” Kirk stated. “We cannot relinquish America’s largest city to radical ideologies. It is imperative for each citizen to engage in the political process in whatever manner they can. The outcome of this election will shape the future of western civilization, and right now, all eyes are on New York City.”
