Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) is set to suspend its long-established transgender treatment program for children and young adults this summer, following mounting pressure from the Trump administration.
The hospital’s Center for Transyouth Health and Development notified nearly 3,000 patient families on Thursday about the program’s closure, scheduled for July 22. According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, hospital officials cited a lack of “viable alternatives” to continue providing specialized care.
In an email addressed to staff, CHLA executives stated that this decision marks a painful and significant change for the organization, posing challenges to the hospital’s mission, vision, and values.
The hospital’s announcement follows an extended evaluation of the serious impacts stemming from federal administrative actions and proposed policies. These developments have led CHLA to temporarily halt the onboarding of new patients into the transgender care program earlier this winter.
In January, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at restricting federal funding for “chemical and surgical” sex-change procedures for minors. This directive has prompted numerous hospitals across the country to reconsider or abandon their transgender treatment programs for children.
The executive order, titled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” asserts that medical professionals are harming impressionable children by promoting irreversible medical interventions under the notion that gender can be altered.
The order further emphasizes that this dangerous trend must cease, warning of its lasting consequences on the nation’s history.
Many patients and their families expressed outrage and fear regarding the LA children’s hospital’s decision to shut down the program. Maxine, a mother of a currently enrolled patient, voiced her disappointment and concern to the Los Angeles Times, stating the challenge lies in how to communicate this news to her child who has had a positive experience with CHLA.
Maxine shared her thoughts on the increasingly challenging landscape, stating, “We’re slowly going underground. You put one thing in place, and then you have to prepare for when that gets taken away. We’re just trying to stay a couple of steps ahead, sticking together with other parents, knowing who our allies are.”
The hospital’s executives revealed that federal agencies including the Department of Justice, Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services warned of severe repercussions for healthcare providers that defy the Trump administration’s executive order. CHLA officials emphasized that the combination of various federal signals indicates a swift and decisive crackdown on any organizations perceived to be violating the directive.
The email from hospital leadership highlighted that the Attorney General’s memo and the recent solicitation of tips from the FBI pose significant threats to healthcare professionals providing gender-affirming care.
CHLA’s Transyouth Center is recognized as one of the largest transgender youth programs in the nation, offering puberty blockers, hormones, and surgical procedures specifically tailored for children. The program relies heavily on public funding and its suspension raises serious concerns among activists.
Activists argue that the closure of such a prominent program may set a dangerous precedent for other hospitals across the country that provide critical transgender youth treatments.
As discussions around gender-affirming care intensify, the implications of CHLA’s decision extend beyond California. The evolving political climate surrounding transgender healthcare indicates potential challenges for such services across the United States.
In light of this situation, many advocates feel compelled to continue fighting for the rights and healthcare needs of transgender youth. This moment represents not only a pivotal point for CHLA but also a barometer for the future of transgender healthcare nationwide.
