Space Force General Chance Saltzman has issued alarming warnings regarding China’s rapid advancements in space technology. During a recent testimony before the bipartisan U.S.-China Commission, he emphasized that the United States risks losing its supremacy in orbit due to China’s aggressive investments in space capabilities.
Saltzman described China’s developments as “mind-boggling,” specifically mentioning its extensive efforts to create both ground-based and space-based weapon systems aimed at neutralizing adversary satellites. These include kinetic strikes, radio-frequency jamming, and directed energy weapons.
The U.S. military is grappling with resource limitations. Saltzman conveyed that, unlike China, which is heavily investing in its space ambitions, the U.S. is still deliberating on which technologies can offer the most utility for national defense.
This troubling scenario unfolds as Congress deliberates on effective strategies to counteract China’s growing space aggression. China’s military budget has surged by 7% this year. This increase bolsters its stockpile of anti-satellite missiles and advanced capabilities, including directed energy weapons that can disrupt satellite signals.
In his testimony, Saltzman warned of the potential consequences of a satellite destruction in orbit, an act which could lead to global disaster. He pointed to the hazardous debris resulting from Russia’s 2021 anti-satellite missile test and China’s test in 2007, which continue to pose significant risks to spacecraft safety.
According to Saltzman, China’s capabilities in space-based targeting have evolved impressively. Hundreds of satellites are now actively tracking U.S. military assets in orbit, prompting the Space Force to adopt a new mission. This mission focuses on denying China the ability to surveil American satellites in real time.
Despite the escalating threats, Saltzman expressed concern that the U.S. is lagging behind in its space defense capabilities. The budget allocated to the Space Force has dwindled, even as space emerges as a critical military theater. Lawmakers, he argued, still operate under an “out of sight, out of mind” approach.
Saltzman articulated the necessity of viewing the modern battlefield as inclusive of space. He stated that failure to protect American interests in the space domain and to deny adversaries similar capabilities could critically undermine military objectives across all domains.
Addressing funding issues, Saltzman noted that the current missions outnumber those that are funded. The Space Force remains under-resourced in relation to its expanding responsibilities. For instance, while China has operational quantum satellites, the U.S. does not. Quantum satellites offer ultra-secure communication and advanced navigation capabilities, providing significant strategic advantages.
Saltzman highlighted that China’s commitment to space technology for long-range precision strikes and reusable launch vehicles represents a pivotal moment in space access. He expressed concerns that China may soon overshadow U.S. leadership in this critical area.
Just weeks prior, Space Force Vice Chief of Operations General Michael Guetlein disclosed that China has been conducting satellite “dogfighting” exercises. This disturbing development indicates China’s increased capacity to execute complex operations in orbit.
Guetlein explained that the Space Force has observed at least five different objects in space maneuvering around one another with precision and control. This level of coordination signals an unsettling advancement in China’s military tactics in space.
The implications of Saltzman and Guetlein’s statements are profound. The United States must reevaluate its priorities regarding space defense. As China’s capabilities continue to grow, the U.S. faces an urgent need for strategic focus and increased investment in its space military capabilities.
Maintaining dominance in space is critical for national security. The future of U.S. military operations and space safety depends on decisive actions taken today. Leaders in Washington must acknowledge the evolving threats posed by China and act accordingly to protect U.S. interests in the increasingly contested space domain.
