Christina Applegate’s battle with multiple sclerosis has profoundly affected her 14-year-old daughter, Sadie. In a recent episode of her podcast, MeSsy, Applegate opened up about the emotional toll her illness has taken on her family.
Applegate explained that Sadie grew up knowing her as a healthy, active individual. For years, the actress was a runner, a dancer, and an avid user of fitness equipment. However, after her diagnosis in 2021, Sadie faced a stark reality. Applegate noted, “When this came about, she was, like, stoic about it. She didn’t fully understand what was happening to me.”
As time has passed, the impacts of Applegate’s condition have become more apparent. She described moments when she struggles to walk down the hallway or get out of bed, saying, “Right now, I can barely get to the bathroom, it’s the worst. But that’s neither here nor there. It’s broken her.” These candid revelations provide insight into the challenges both she and her daughter encounter daily.
With each passing day, the severity of Applegate’s symptoms appears to escalate. She reflected on how this change equates to a loss for her daughter. “It was like losing the mom she had to this f—ing thing,” Applegate remarked. “She didn’t know this. And the more she gets older now, I think the more it’s hurting her.” During the uncertain times of the pandemic, Sadie faced additional challenges as her mother’s abilities faded.
Applegate emphasized that the transition from a vibrant, active lifestyle to navigating significant limitations has weighed heavily on Sadie. Aside from physical changes, Sadie’s emotional struggles are becoming more vivid. “I see it in her eyes. I see it,” Applegate shared.
Despite these challenges, Applegate finds moments of beauty amid the turbulence. When they venture out together, her daughter shows immense support, always holding her arm to help ease her anxiety. “She’s always trying to help me through and help me with my cane,” Applegate explained, detailing Sadie’s nurturing role.
At home, Sadie’s dependency on her mother becomes evident. “Can you please go down and make my food, because you’re the only one who can make it?” Sadie asks. Applegate admits that navigating the stairs is often a daunting task. Yet, she pushes through, knowing it reassures Sadie that her mother still can care for her.
In 2021, Applegate disclosed her MS diagnosis publicly, marking a significant moment in her life. The actress has faced real depression stemming from her condition. “I’m in a depression right now, which I don’t think I’ve felt in years,” she admitted. The intensity of these feelings can be overwhelming, as she described the darkness engulfing her.
Last year, Applegate revealed having been hospitalized over 30 times due to crippling MS symptoms. She stated, “For three years, since I was diagnosed, I’ve been in the hospital upwards of 30 times from throwing up and diarrhea and pain.” The ongoing health struggles reveal the physical toll MS takes, drastically impacting Applegate’s wellbeing.
Through her experiences, Applegate wishes to shed light on multiple sclerosis and its often invisible effects. “One of the things with MS is that it slows down our organs. I have noticed that—if I have to poop, I puke,” she shared candidly. This unfiltered perspective is crucial as it lays bare the daily battles faced by those living with the illness, helping to foster empathy and understanding.
She humorously suggested to her audience, “Always have a little trash can next to your toilet. Because you can do both without it being messy.” Such moments of levity provide her listeners with a glimpse of how humor helps navigate her difficulties.
As Applegate continues to manage her condition, the journey remains complex for both her and Sadie. The impact of illness stretches far beyond physical limitations; it encapsulates shifts in family dynamics, emotional connections, and the challenges of care. Moving forward, Applegate hopes to inspire others dealing with similar struggles.
Although her situation is fraught with challenges, the bond between Applegate and her daughter persists. Their relationship, tested by the trials of MS, showcases resilience and a deep connection. Both mother and daughter are navigating uncharted waters together, with love and support as their guiding light.
