Former Disney star Christy Carlson Romano recently found herself in a precarious situation while celebrating her husband Brendan Rooney’s birthday. The actress nearly lost an eye during a clay pigeon shooting outing, a birthday gift she intended for her husband.
On Saturday, the 40-year-old actress took to Instagram to share a video documenting her injuries, which included a large wound under her right eye. Romano revealed that she had been struck in five locations by stray pellets from another group on the shooting range.
In her video, Romano explained that the day’s activities were designed to be a memorable present for Rooney. With a shaky sigh, she opened the clip by stating, “So, I got shot in the eye. It was not fun.”
Pointing to her injuries, she described how she sustained the wounds. “I got shot here. It is still inside,” Romano said, indicating a bullet hole near her eye, which appeared swollen and bruised.
As she continued to examine her face, Romano noted a fragment lodged near her eye and another mark on her forehead. She demonstrated to her followers where the medical team had cleaned out the wounds, lifting her hair to reveal the area.
Expressing her gratitude, Romano said, “I’m very grateful to first responders as a whole. I mean, they’re just the most amazing superheroes to take care of us at our most desperate times.” She emphasized the role of the medical personnel who treated her injuries at a local hospital in Austin, Texas.
Reflecting on the seriousness of the incident, Romano stated, “This was really bad tonight. Everything’s kind of clearing out. But I’ve got to say, I got shot in the face. And I live to tell the tale.”
In her post’s caption, Romano elaborated on the events leading to her injury. “Yesterday was my husband’s birthday, and I took him to shoot clay pigeons as a present. There was another party with us, and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face.”
Following the incident, her husband Rooney quickly took action by assessing her injuries and ensuring she received immediate medical attention. Romano revealed that she had sustained injuries in five locations, one of which was perilously close to her right eye.
She shared, “Unfortunately, a fragment got lodged behind my eye, and it is too risky to remove surgically at this time. Doctors will continue to monitor me.” Despite the grim circumstances, Romano affirmed that she could still see normally.
“With everything that happened, all I can think about is how grateful I am to be alive. I love my daughters, husband, family, and friends so much,” she expressed. Romano emphasized the importance of embracing life, saying, “I saw my life flash before my eyes; I’m telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can. Life can change in an instant.”
Romano and Rooney first crossed paths in February 2011 and tied the knot in December 2013. Together, they share two daughters, Isabella Victoria, 8, and Sophia Elizabeth, 5.
In a show of love and support, Rooney paid tribute to his wife in the comments of her Instagram post. He wrote, “You are the bravest, toughest, most stoic and badass woman I have ever met. I am so thankful you are alive. I wouldn’t know what to do without you.”
Furthermore, he declared his love for Romano, stating, “I love you more than life itself,” accompanied by a prayer hands emoji. Rooney also shared his wife’s video on his own Instagram story, reminding his followers to “Kiss your loved ones,” alongside a red heart emoji.
Clay pigeon shooting, the sport Romano participated in, involves the use of machines called traps to propel circular disks made of limestone and pitch into the air as targets. Shooters aim to hit the disks using shotguns, which fire hundreds of small lead pellets. While the sport is typically enjoyed safely, adherence to strict safety protocols is crucial to avoid accidents.
Clay pigeon shooting can be a thrilling activity for enthusiasts, yet safety remains paramount. Proper training and supervision are essential, particularly when multiple parties participate in the sport. Explaining the rules and establishing clear communication among shooters can help prevent unfortunate incidents like the one experienced by Romano.
Romano’s experience serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent risks associated with shooting sports. Enthusiasts are encouraged to prioritize safety at all times to ensure enjoyable and injury-free experiences.
Romano’s harrowing experience reinforces the importance of cherishing every moment. Her heartfelt message about the fragility of life resonates with many, especially after such a near-fatal incident. Just as she expressed, it is important to appreciate loved ones and acknowledge the gift of each day.
