Former NBC host Chuck Todd expressed grave concerns regarding America’s trajectory towards a so-called cold civil war. During a recent episode of The Chuck Toddcast, he highlighted the ongoing redistricting battles in states such as Texas and California as indicative of deeper national strife.
Todd characterized these redistricting conflicts as a troubling chapter in what appears to be a rising civil discord. He attributed the deterioration of political norms to actions taken by President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, suggesting they pose a significant challenge to the values of the constitutional republic.
Despite his discomfort in using such extreme language, Todd could not find a suitable alternative to describe the current political climate. He remarked, “We are literally having a redistricting war between the states right now, and we have governors who have decided they don’t care about the minority rights in their own states.”
In reference to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Todd stated that if residents do not align with Abbott’s views, they face potential repercussions that could undermine their rights. Similarly, he pointed out that California Governor Gavin Newsom employs a similar strategy, ensuring his ideology prevails.

“This is not a policy fight. This isn’t the usual partisan back and forth. It is a direct stress test of whether our constitutional system actually works when a president and his party decide they don’t have to care about the limits that are written down on paper,” Todd articulated. He criticized Trump for repeatedly bending and, in some cases, breaking the framework designed to maintain a balanced republic.

Todd stated, “When you tell yourself you’re in a war, you start rationalizing things you’d normally not do that you would say is immoral or wrong or unprincipled. But hey, it’s war and all is fair in war, right?”

As Todd concluded his remarks, he called upon Republican members of Congress to wield their constitutional authority to hold Trump accountable for actions he deems unconstitutional. He lamented the lack of oversight, stating, “They’ve not lifted one finger of oversight. Not one… You couldn’t even say there’ve been a weak check on Trump. It has been no check on him at all.”
Todd reminded listeners that the Constitution does not enforce itself and requires responsible individuals to uphold its principles. Without proactive measures from lawmakers, he warned that the foundational values of democracy risk becoming mere words on yellowing parchment.
