Three Chilean men have been indicted in connection with the burglary of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s residence. According to a recently filed federal criminal complaint, the suspects made a disturbing display by posing for selfies with some of the stolen items.
The two luxury pieces identified include a diamond-studded necklace featuring the initials “JB9” and a necklace adorned with a diamond “9”. These items are significant as Burrow, a two-time Pro Bowler, famously wore the No. 9 jersey both at Louisiana State University and during his time with the Bengals.
A separate FBI report included a photograph showcasing several pieces of jewelry arranged on a table, further illustrating the extent of the theft.
The accused individuals, Jordan Francisco Quiroga Sanchez (22), Bastian Alejandro Orellana Morales (23), and Sergio Andres Ortega Cabello (38), were apprehended by the Ohio State Patrol. Authorities tracked the trio across multiple states after they broke into Burrow’s home, according to court documents.
The Cincinnati Bengals issued a formal statement on Wednesday, expressing their appreciation for the rapid response and thorough investigative work by law enforcement agencies. The organization acknowledged the efforts of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and other local, state, and federal agencies involved in the case.
In their statement, the Bengals said, “The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and their partner agencies at the local, state, and federal level did a wonderful job investigating the crime and bringing bad actors to justice. We extend our sincere appreciation for their good work and recognize the tremendous amount of complex investigative efforts that went into these indictments. The Sheriff’s Department was exemplary in this work.”
They also emphasized their long-standing collaborative relationship with the Sheriff’s Department, reinforcing the team’s commitment to supporting law enforcement as the legal process proceeds.
Upon their arrest, the suspects had burglary tools in their possession, along with a Bengals cap and a Louisiana State University shirt believed to be stolen from Burrow’s home. These findings correlate with ongoing investigations into a series of burglaries involving South American theft groups across various parts of the United States.
The complaint indicates that these groups often consist of individuals who enter the country illegally or who overstay their visas. They primarily target high-value items such as jewelry and designer accessories.
Interestingly, Burrow was engaged in a game against the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas, at the time when the burglary occurred. An incident report identified Olivia Ponton, a model and social media influencer who works with Burrow, as being present at the home during the break-in. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the incident.
After the break-in, Burrow spoke out, sharing his feelings of violation. In a statement made after the incident, he said, “I feel like my privacy has been violated in more ways than one. There’s way more information out there than I would want or care to share, so that’s all I got to say about that.” His remarks underscored the emotional impact such a crime can have on a person, particularly someone in the public eye.
This incident not only highlights the complexities surrounding personal safety for high-profile athletes but also raises concerns about the security measures surrounding their homes. As South American theft syndicates increasingly target affluent individuals, there may be a growing need for enhanced security protocols that protect not only physical possessions but also the sense of personal safety and privacy.
The Bengals and the entire Cincinnati community will continue to watch this case closely, hoping for a swift resolution and justice for the victims of this crime.
