On September 23, 2023, 39-year-old Chris Lewis was returning home from a Cincinnati Reds game when he fell victim to an unprovoked assault by three juvenile offenders. Suddenly, he was struck in the eye, an experience that would drastically alter the course of his life.

“They just immediately sucker-punched me in the eye,” Lewis recounted in an interview. “As soon as it happened, I knew I was in serious trouble.”

Over a challenging year and a half, Lewis endured six surgeries aimed at restoring his vision. Unfortunately, none were successful, leading him to ultimately lose his eye and requiring him to wear a prosthetic.

“After they hit me, I realized my eye was exposed,” he continued. “I tried to shield my face and explain to them that they had caused a serious injury, but they just kept kicking me and ignored my pleas.”

The teens not only assaulted Lewis but also robbed him of his belongings, including his earbuds and phone, before fleeing the scene. The impact of this violent crime has left a significant mark on Lewis, who expressed how it has changed his life fundamentally.

“It has drastically reduced my quality of life,” Lewis stated. “Driving is difficult now, and my confidence has taken a hit. This incident has created a before and after in my life; it has affected my relationships and every facet of my existence.”

The alarming trend of increasing juvenile crime in Cincinnati has raised widespread concern. Lewis highlighted a perceived lack of resources dedicated to addressing such incidents, stating that no arrests have been made for his assault.

“There seems to be a constant struggle with managing juvenile behavior,” Lewis observed. “It feels like resources are overstretched, leading to an ineffective investigation of crimes like mine.”

Adding to the frustration is the public’s response to rising crime rates in the neighborhood. Lewis believes community leaders need to tackle the underlying issues rather than allowing fear and uncertainty to grow unchecked.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community,” he insisted. “We need to collaborate to develop and implement lasting solutions. It’s disheartening to watch the discussions turn into entrenched arguments, rather than focusing on preventing further violence.”

“We posted reward signs, and a student from the school attended by one of the kids helped identify suspects,” Karen mentioned. “Despite this, it felt like the investigator did not put enough effort into apprehending the attackers.”

Lewis’s mother also called out what she views as a lenient approach from the juvenile justice system in the city. This has resulted in a growing sense of helplessness among residents.

“The juvenile court system fails us,” she asserted. “Many crimes are kept confidential, leaving my son, and many others, unaware of the dangers lurking in their community.”

Cincinnati Police Public Information Officer Lieutenant Jonathan Cunningham addressed concerns over the investigation into Lewis’s attack. He noted that identifying suspects is complex, especially when incidents occur during late-night hours.

“While I don’t have details on the case at this moment, I recall significant investigative efforts were made,” Cunningham stated. “Our teams are dedicated to addressing violence and ensuring those responsible are held accountable.”
