Clemson University is taking significant steps to honor military veterans. The baseball team at the South Carolina institution has launched a poignant tradition that ensures proper recognition for those who have served their country.
Head coach Erik Bakich emphasized the importance of this gesture on the popular morning show, stating that the players understand their opportunity to play baseball in a free nation is possible only due to the sacrifices made by servicemen and women.
Recognizing Veterans in the Stands
During home games, the sound system encourages veterans in attendance to rise and receive applause from the crowd. Following this, Clemson players move throughout the stands, engaging in handshakes and expressions of gratitude towards each veteran, all while the iconic song “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood plays in the background.
Coach Bakich remarked that these interactions often culminate in deeply emotional moments for both players and veterans. He noted, “I think there’s been some tear-jerking moments for some of them, especially those who maybe haven’t always received the warmest welcome. But to know in our program and at our games, they’re going to be recognized like they should is significant.”
