He pointed out that mainstream American interest in soccer often ebbs and flows with the four-year World Cup cycle. Famous players, such as Lionel Messi, have begun to pierce the American consciousness, but Dempsey insists that consistent success from the USMNT would further elevate soccer’s profile.
“If the U.S. performs well on the world stage, the possibilities are limitless,” he commented. Despite his optimism, Dempsey also expressed concerns about the team’s recent struggles, particularly following their disappointing exit from the group stage in last year’s Copa América, held on U.S. soil.
“For the U.S. to be the only host nation not to advance from the group stage is a glaring mark of failure,” Dempsey noted candidly. “Nevertheless, I believe the team can bounce back. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino needs more time to build and develop this squad.”

The soccer tryouts, taking place in Chicago, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Dallas, will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to the top 11 players to train in Madrid, at the Ciudad Real Madrid facility. Dempsey is enthusiastic about offering young athletes a platform to pursue their dreams.
“I feel fortunate to create opportunities for kids to chase their dreams. Dallas is where it all began for me, which makes it special to return to my roots,” Dempsey explained. “These young players aren’t just competing; they will also learn valuable lessons about nutrition to enhance their futures in sports.”
Through this initiative, Dempsey aims to cultivate a love for soccer while equipping aspiring athletes with tools for success. He believes that by investing in the future of young soccer players, he can contribute to the broader goal of elevating the sport in America.
“It’s been my mission to grow the game,” Dempsey elaborated. “Whether it’s through trailblazing or offering these kids opportunities, I want to help shape their futures.” He acknowledges his busy life as a father of six, balancing family time with his professional commitments, yet he remains focused on paving the way for the next generation.
While looking ahead to the World Cup, Dempsey hopes that the word “failure” will not be associated with the USMNT’s performance. He insists that getting out of the group stage is essential, especially given the added pressure as one of the host nations.
“Minimum expectations for the team must include advancing beyond the group round,” Dempsey stated firmly. “Failing to do so would be considered a setback. Building public belief and excitement during early matches is crucial, as anything can happen in the knockout stages.”
