CNN’s Dana Bash Faces Backlash Over Controversial Comments on January 6 Violence

CNN anchor Dana Bash stirred significant controversy on social media after labeling the January 6 Capitol riot as the most violent moment in recent history during a broadcast on President Donald Trump’s crime-fighting initiatives in Washington D.C. on Monday. In the segment, she highlighted Trump’s plans for escalating federal efforts to address crime in the nation’s capital.

Earlier that same day, Trump announced the federalization of law enforcement officers and the deployment of the National Guard to combat the rising crime rates in Washington, D.C. This announcement marked a pivotal moment in Trump’s ongoing narrative regarding crime management in the nation’s capital.

As Bash concluded a panel discussion focusing on Trump’s statement, she made her inflammatory remark about the Capitol protest before the show went to commercial. “As we go to break, I must emphasize that the most violent incident in D.C. recent history was January 6, when many people attacked the United States Capitol in the name of Donald Trump,” she stated. Her comments extended to mention the individuals injured, including law enforcement personnel during that day.

This statement ignited a wave of criticism online, with many users disputing Bash’s assertion that the January 6 event outstripped other violent incidents in the city. “This is beyond parody – it genuinely insults viewers,” remarked Benjamin Weingarten, a senior contributor at The Federalist.

Furthermore, radio host Ryan Schuiling contributed to the discussion by highlighting that 2023 experienced a 20-year high with 274 homicides recorded. He pointed out that among the fatalities directly linked to the January 6 events, only Ashli Babbitt lost her life, while Officer Brian Sicknick, who died the following day, succumbed to a stroke, contradicting previous narratives about his death.

In a separate critique, reporter Jim Stinson reminded audiences of the widespread destruction during the May 2020 riots, stating, “Ummm, @DanaBashCNN—BLM literally set the D.C. streets on fire during the May 2020 riots. And they attacked the White House.” Stinson complemented his assertion with screenshots of news reports detailing the riots.

CNN’s managing editor Curtis Houck chimed in, noting the discrepancy in Bash’s focus on January 6 regarding the rising crime rate in D.C. “The only time CNN’s Dana Bash directed strong criticism at Washington D.C. crime was when she mentioned January 6,” he stated.

Ohio journalist Walter Curt expressed dismay, pointing out the 14 homicides that occurred in Washington D.C. within the previous month alone. “CNN is a JOKE,” he exclaimed, illustrating the discontent from various commentators who feel the network misrepresents ongoing violence.

CNN was approached for a response to the public backlash.

In a similar vein, NBC reporter Jonathan Allen voiced comparable sentiments during a panel segment on MSNBC’s
