‘It Ends With Us’ author Colleen Hoover has expressed her displeasure regarding the ongoing legal turmoil tied to the film adaptation of her bestselling novel. She characterized the situation as a ‘circus,’ highlighting the emotional impact on those involved.
Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, who star in the movie, have been embroiled in a legal battle for nearly a year. The conflict centers around accusations made during the production of the film, which is based on Hoover’s work. The ongoing disputes over allegations of misconduct have sparked widespread interest in both the legal proceedings and the implications for the actors’ careers.
In a candid interview with Elle magazine, Hoover remarked, ‘It feels like a circus. When there are real people involved, with real feelings and emotions. This actually truly has impacted some of the actors’ careers in huge ways. And I just find it all-around sad.’
The legal conflict intensified in December when Lively detailed allegations against Baldoni and producer Jamey Heath. Her claims included sexual harassment, retaliation, emotional distress, and negligence. The case initially filed with the California Civil Rights Department was later escalated to federal court.
Baldoni responded to these claims with his own lawsuit, asserting that Lively had ‘falsely’ accused him to salvage her reputation following controversy from the film’s press tour. His legal team argued that Lively lacked proof of any intentional misconduct on his part, framing the allegations as an effort to divert backlash.
Notably, Baldoni’s lawsuit, which sought significant damages, has since been dismissed, yet the fallout continues to cast a shadow over the film.
Colleen Hoover has remained somewhat detached from the turmoil surrounding her book’s adaptation. She expressed a desire to distance herself from the negativity, emphasizing her intention to protect her creative work. ‘I have my own story I could tell… but I don’t want to bring attention to it, and I don’t want to have to put someone else down to lift myself up,’ she stated.
Despite the mounting public speculation, Hoover finds it increasingly challenging to engage with the controversy. ‘I feel like it’s so big at this point that there’s nothing anyone can say to change whatever opinion people have of it, even though no one has the actual truth,’ she added.
The ongoing legal disputes have not only affected the actors but also cast a long shadow over Hoover’s literary legacy. Reflecting on this, she voiced her concerns, saying, ‘I can’t even recommend it anymore. I feel like [the lawsuit] has overshadowed it. I’m almost embarrassed to say I wrote it. When people ask what I do, I’m just like, ‘I’m a writer. Please don’t ask me what I wrote.’’
Originally inspired by her mother’s experiences, Hoover noted that the tumultuous events surrounding the film adaptation have drastically changed her feelings about the story she once cherished. ‘The book was inspired by her story, and now it gives us PTSD to think about it,’ she said, describing the emotional burden that has resulted from the legal disputes.
The ongoing legal battles between Lively and Baldoni are far from over, with significant court proceedings set for March 2026. Hoover remains hopeful that with time, the distress caused by the situation will diminish. ‘The more time that passes, the easier everything gets for all of us,’ she affirmed. However, the ramifications of this public dispute continue to affect her personal connection to the book.
In expressing her sentiments about the situation, Hoover commented, ‘But it is sad, because I was very proud of that book. And I’m still proud of it, but less publicly so. Maybe I need therapy, I don’t know.’
The legal drama connected to the film adaptation of ‘It Ends With Us’ has left a significant mark on all parties involved. With Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni at the center of a whirlwind of accusations and counterclaims, the film’s release has become overshadowed by this ongoing saga. As Colleen Hoover navigates her role as both the author and an observer of this circus, her thoughts reflect the collective dilemma faced by those impacted by such a turbulent story.
