A college student has been detained by federal authorities in Boston after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at a Tesla dealership located in Missouri while on spring break.
Owen McIntire, 19, from Kansas City, faces charges stemming from his actions. He appeared in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts on Friday and faces serious allegations. McIntire is charged with unlawful possession of an unregistered destructive device and malicious damage by fire of property used in interstate commerce, according to court documents filed in the Western District of Missouri.
On March 17, a Kansas City Missouri Police Department officer, who was present near the Tesla Center, observed smoke rising from a Cybertruck parked in the dealership’s lot around midnight.
The officer located a Molotov cocktail that remained intact beside the burning Cybertruck, as indicated in an affidavit.
Firefighters from the Kansas City Fire Department responded quickly to extinguish the blaze. The flames had spread from the Cybertruck to a second vehicle in the lot, which both suffered substantial damage.
The Cybertrucks involved in the incident had sale values of $105,485 and $107,485, while the fire also caused damage to two Tesla charging stations, with an estimated value of $550 each.
Federal agents and forensic experts from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been involved in the investigation, recovering and analyzing evidence, including Molotov cocktails reportedly used in the arson attack.
Authorities later discovered video footage showing a figure believed to be McIntire, wearing a distinctive large hat, igniting the Molotov cocktails and hurling them at the Cybertrucks before fleeing the scene.
Investigators found the hat near the dealership, and DNA evidence linked it to McIntire, further implicating him in the incident.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi issued a stern warning in response to the incident, stating that anyone attempting to firebomb Tesla properties will face severe consequences. Her statement emphasized that individuals will be arrested, prosecuted, and could spend decades behind bars for such actions.
FBI Director Kash Patel commented that McIntire’s arrest marks the second apprehension within the week for crimes targeting Tesla. He highlighted the seriousness of these actions, labeling them both dangerous and illegal.
“We are committed to collaborating with our partners at the Department of Justice to hold accountable all those who commit crimes of this nature,” Patel added.
The investigation is being conducted by the FBI’s Kansas City and Boston field offices, alongside the ATF and the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department.
