Recent research indicates that psychiatric disorders may share genetic influences, revealing that parts of DNA could be responsible for multiple mental health conditions. This breakthrough study, spearheaded by Texas A&M University researchers and published in Nature, offers insights into why several mental health issues often occur together.
The researchers analyzed DNA data from over one million individuals diagnosed with 14 different psychiatric disorders that can manifest during childhood or adulthood. They then compared this data with genetic information from five million individuals free of these conditions.
Conditions were categorized into five distinct groups: compulsive disorders, which include OCD and anorexia; schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and ADHD; internalizing disorders, including depression and anxiety; and substance-use disorders.
This extensive analysis identified 238 genetic variations that affect brain functionality, providing clues about why certain mental conditions share similarities while others differ dramatically. Notably, traits such as suicidal tendencies and feelings of isolation were associated with all five disorder categories.
For the group comprising schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, researchers pinpointed the strongest genetic links within brain cells that are responsible for transmitting
