The tragic events that unfolded Thursday at Florida State University have left the community reeling. Authorities have identified Robert Morales and Tiru Chabba as the two victims tragically killed in a mass shooting on campus. Both men were beloved family figures and dedicated employees in the food service industry.
Shortly before noon, a shooting incident occurred in Tallahassee, resulting in eight injuries. While six victims are expected to recover fully, the loss of Morales and Chabba has left an indelible mark on their families and friends.
Police identified 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, an FSU student and stepson of a Leon County Sheriff’s Office deputy, as the suspected shooter. Eyewitness accounts indicate that he did not comply with commands during the encounter with law enforcement and was subsequently shot.
According to officials, the immediate response to the shooting showcased the courage of first responders and the quick action taken by the police to mitigate further harm.
Leon High School’s athletics department confirmed the heartbreaking news of Morales’ death. A former assistant football coach, Morales was known for his dedication and passion for mentoring young athletes.
The school released a heartfelt statement outlining his contributions: “Coach Morales was a beloved member of our athletic community, serving with integrity and a genuine passion for helping young players grow. His commitment extended far beyond the football field, impacting the lives of many.”
Friends and family are rallying around Morales’ wife, Betty, as a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $31,000 as of Friday afternoon. The organizers emphasized the family’s need for financial support during this unimaginably difficult time.
“Robert leaves behind a wife and daughter,” stated the fundraiser’s message. “We invite you to help us provide financial assistance to the Morales family as they navigate the road ahead.”
The Strom Law Firm confirmed the death of Tiru Chabba, a 45-year-old father of two from Greenville, South Carolina. He was working on the FSU campus for a vendor at the time of the incident. The firm’s news release highlighted the profound sadness experienced by Chabba’s family.
