Concerns Rise as Over 700 Iranian Nationals Released in the US During Biden’s Term Amid Terrorism Worries

Recent data reveals that more than 1,500 Iranian nationals have been apprehended at the U.S. southern border during the Biden administration, leading to substantial concerns about national security. Notably, nearly 50% of these individuals were allowed to remain in the country after their arrests, according to a senior official with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The Border Patrol recorded a total of 1,504 Iranian nationals arrested between fiscal year 2021 and fiscal year 2024. Out of these arrests, 729 individuals were released back into the United States, raising questions about the vetting process and the implications of such releases.

Yearly Increase in Arrests and Releases

The statistics illustrate a troubling trend, with the number of arrests growing significantly each year. In fiscal year 2021, only 48 Iranian nationals were apprehended. This figure skyrocketed to 797 in fiscal year 2024, showing an alarming increase in border crossings by Iranian individuals.

Similarly, the number of Iranian nationals released into the U.S. has also escalated. From 12 releases in fiscal year 2021, the number surged to 448 by fiscal year 2024, reflecting a potentially lax approach to handling these cases.

Concerns Over Investigations and Terrorism Watchlists

The Biden administration has faced criticism for denying requests for information concerning how many released individuals were on terrorism watchlists. The administration cited privacy concerns and a lack of public interest as reasons for not disclosing this information. This response has further fueled anxieties surrounding the safety of Americans and the effectiveness of the current vetting process.

In parallel, there were over 2 million known “gotaways” at the border during the Biden administration. These individuals eluded capture, making it impossible to determine their origins or intentions, thereby complicating matters of national security.
