Concerns Rise as REAL ID Delays Affect Travelers Ahead of Deadline

The countdown has reached its final stages. Americans will soon face significant changes in their travel identification requirements. Starting Wednesday, May 7, standard driver’s licenses will no longer suffice for domestic air travel. Instead, travelers must present a REAL ID featuring a gold star in the upper right corner.

As this pivotal deadline approaches, many Americans express anxiety about obtaining their new identification in time for their travels. A growing number of individuals find themselves waiting for their REAL IDs to arrive by mail.

Essential Travel Requirements

Starting May 7, anyone flying domestically will be required to show a REAL ID or an alternate form of acceptable identification. For those who enrolled for a REAL ID, the delivery time can be inconsistent depending on the state.

In New York, the DMV states that upon application, a temporary document will be issued, and the final REAL ID should arrive via mail in approximately two weeks. Meanwhile, California’s DMV indicates that applicants can expect their physical REAL ID card within a timeframe of two to four weeks post-application.

For residents of Michigan, the identification should be delivered within two to three weeks. Conversely, Pennsylvania offers a faster solution whereby those enrolling at a DMV can receive their REAL ID within 15 business days. If a traveler visits a PennDOT REAL ID Center, they can get verified in real-time and obtain their REAL ID on the same day.

Expert Insights on Delays

Daniel Velez, a spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in New England, shared guidance for passengers still awaiting their REAL IDs. He advised that individuals presenting a non-compliant state ID, accompanied by a state letter or receipt, might undergo additional screening but can expect a quicker process than those who only provide minimal documentation.

Velez further emphasized the importance of carrying an alternative form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, which could expedite the security process at airports. He urged those without any acceptable IDs to arrive at the airport three hours prior to their departure.

Alternative Identification Options

Travelers can use various forms of identification in lieu of a REAL ID. Acceptable alternatives include valid U.S. passports or passport cards, trusted traveler cards like Global Entry, Department of Defense IDs, permanent resident cards, and border crossing cards. This variety of options aims to help travelers navigate through security without undue complications.
