As the New York City mayoral race heats up, socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani’s previous views on policing have sparked significant concern among New Yorkers, particularly in light of recent tragic events. Mangual, who serves as a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, highlights that Mamdani’s stated disdain for law enforcement raises alarm bells for citizens. “What worries many New Yorkers,” Mangual pointed out, “is that Mamdani has demonstrated a clear lack of respect for police officers. This sentiment, coupled with his push for drastic reforms like defunding the NYPD, creates a palpable anxiety in the community.”
An Inadequate Walkback?
In response to public outcry and the violence that shook the city, Mamdani attempted to soften his previous statements during a recent press conference. Despite this effort, Mangual remains skeptical. He noted in an op-ed for the New York Post that the clarifications offered may not be sufficient to assuage the fears of New Yorkers.
Mangual stated, “Even if Mamdani decides not to act on his most extreme views, his advocacy for numerous policy changes could significantly undermine public safety, particularly in neighborhoods grappling with gun violence.”

Mangual detailed further potential consequences if Mamdani were to become mayor. He pointed out that cooperation with the city council could lead to the dismantling of crucial resources, such as the NYPD gang database. “If we were to rely on a mayor who opts for a less-structured approach to policing,” Mangual explained, “we might find ourselves with an NYPD that is even less capable of handling crime effectively than it is now.”
Current NYPD Challenges
The state of the NYPD is already less than ideal, with current staffing figures falling significantly short of historical levels. Mangual highlighted that, whereas the department previously employed around 41,000 officers, that number has dwindled to nearly 33,000, which poses serious challenges. Increased demands on the force, including responding to a rising number of 911 calls and addressing new responsibilities post-9/11, further exacerbate the situation.
“As the department grapples with these multiple pressures, it runs the risk of becoming less attractive to potential recruits,” he added.
A Legislative Impact
Mamdani is not new to the complexities of public safety. His record includes advocating for bail reform and discovery reform during his tenure as a state assemblyman. Mangual argued that these legislative efforts have inadvertently made it easier for those arrested to evade meaningful accountability.
“We now face a scenario where a mayor with Mamdani’s history might hinder police recruitment, making it even tougher for the NYPD to maintain adequate staffing levels,” Mangual warned.
