Republicans find themselves at a pivotal moment where they can enact transformative tax reforms that prioritize American prosperity. This opportunity could reward hard work, stimulate job growth, and revitalize the economy for families across the nation.
President Donald Trump has consistently communicated his vision to Congress. In the 2020 elections, 77 million Americans supported his call for lower taxes aimed at those who drive the economy forward. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill, recently passed by the Ways and Means Committee, promises to fulfill this vision. It aims to make permanent the successful provisions of the 2017 tax cuts, extend additional tax relief to American families, and incentivize domestic manufacturing and job creation.
The comprehensive tax relief package includes the elimination of taxes on tips, overtime pay, and auto loan interest, alongside significant benefits for senior citizens. With this legislative effort, Congress has a critical responsibility not to fail the American people.
For two years, the Ways and Means Committee has actively gathered input from working-class Americans, small businesses, farmers, and manufacturers through over 120 events across more than 20 states. This bill reflects the voices of those who matter most: everyday workers. The time has come for Congress to deliver this long-awaited plan.
Being fortunate to have a leader like President Trump is invaluable. He stands firm against special interests and lobbyists entrenched in Washington. Every policy he champions springs from the feedback received from Americans over the past two years. Many communities have historically faced economic challenges and have been overlooked for far too long.
With The One, Big, Beautiful Bill, tangible relief is on the horizon for countless American families. An average family with two children could see an increase of up to $13,300 in their take-home pay. Moreover, this bill would prevent a potential $1,700 tax increase for that family while simultaneously offering an additional $1,300 tax cut. The proposed changes could retain six million American jobs and extend boosted child tax credits to approximately 40 million families. Moreover, the economy could witness a substantial growth of $284 billion, primarily driven by an increase in manufacturing.
This tax bill does not merely aim to boost the economy but also holds elite universities and large nonprofits to account. Historically, these institutions have operated similarly to corporations while pushing political agendas and benefiting from taxpayer support. The new legislation seeks to change this dynamic. If these organizations choose to operate as corporations, they should also be subject to corporate taxation.
Consider Harvard University, which possesses an endowment exceeding $50 billion, larger than the GDP of several nations, including Jordan. It is difficult to justify why such institutions should escape the equivalent of corporate tax rates.
This initiative signifies a shift from ineffective tax policies favoring the wealthy and well-connected towards ones prioritizing the working class. It aims to end Biden-era tax breaks and special interest giveaways that primarily benefited affluent individuals and corporations with ties to China.
The focus of Republican tax policy is clear: to serve the working class rather than a select few. Ensuring taxpayer-funded benefits remain for citizens who adhere to the law is a priority under this bill as well. It proposes to sever access to government benefits like Obamacare and Medicare from illegal immigrants and those committing fraud. Any fees related to remittances or similar actions will ensure that individuals cannot profit from illegal activities while undermining American workers.
Reflecting on my upbringing in a small South Central Missouri town with a population of fewer than 5,000, I recognize the struggles faced by the working class intimately. Having grown up without running water and living in a modest trailer, I have always prioritized policies that benefit hardworking individuals. My journey aligns entirely with the Republican Party’s goal of becoming a true representative of the working class.
When I campaigned for the chairman position of the Ways and Means Committee, I made it clear that the Republican Party aims to represent the working class wholeheartedly. By embodying these priorities in our policies, we can achieve success. The profound impact of the November 5, 2024 elections proved that our approach resonates with voters.
As I reflect on the progress we have made, I proudly acknowledge the unanimous Republican support my colleagues provided in the Ways and Means Committee for this landmark legislation. It is now imperative that the rest of Congress rises to the occasion, ultimately delivering The One, Big, Beautiful Bill to President Donald J. Trump’s desk.
