EXCLUSIVE: In an unprecedented public denouncement of Israeli military actions, Rep. Joe Wilson, a Republican from South Carolina, has issued a stern warning regarding the recent airstrikes on Syrian targets, labeling them as “suicidal” for Israel.
Wilson, who serves as co-chair of the Israel caucus and has long supported the State of Israel, expressed his deep concern in an emotional phone call with Fox News Digital. He stated, “I am heartsick” about the military operations.
The congressman criticized Israel’s strikes on Syria’s military headquarters, arguing that they are not only damaging but also disrespectful to President Donald Trump. Wilson explained that Trump had recently lifted sanctions on Syria after meeting with Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, aiming to offer Damascus an opportunity for economic recovery following the downfall of Bashar al-Assad.
In a bid for peace, Wilson recounted a tense conversation with Israel’s Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, urging him to convey the urgency of terminating the airstrikes. He stressed that the continuation of such military actions poses dire risks.
Just weeks prior to the strikes, discussions aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and Syria were reportedly in progress. Wilson lamented that these airstrikes have effectively derailed those efforts, complicating U.S.-mediated negotiations reminiscent of the Abraham Accords to foster relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. He remarked, “It’s so sad to me, it’s so detrimental.”
The congressman warned that the instability in Syria could spark regional tensions, threatening emerging alliances between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, fractures in Syria could strain NATO relationships with Turkey and exacerbate issues within the Druze population in Jordan. Furthermore, increasing instability among Kurdish groups in Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and Iran is a growing concern. Wilson highlighted that such fragmentation could also pave the way for a potential resurgence of ISIS, which would likely target Israel first.
Wilson pointed to the broader geopolitical ramifications of these strikes, indicating that they bolster Iran’s influence and strengthen Russia’s military presence in Syria. He stated, “Efforts should be made to expel Vladimir Putin’s forces, not to create destabilization,” emphasizing that Moscow uses its bases in Syria to extend its naval power across Africa and the Mediterranean.
“What is being done is actually beneficial to Iran. The more destabilization, the greater opportunity Iran has to incite chaos in other nations, including Iraq, while simultaneously aiding the war efforts of Putin,” he argued.
This week, Israeli National Security Minister Ben Gvir declared that Israel must take action against al-Sharaa. In a statement made on Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz defended the strikes, claiming they aim to protect Druze minority communities in Syria, which might be threatened by Assad’s regime.
Katz expressed his distrust for both Assad the father and the son, citing his lack of faith in al-Sharaa. He warned of al-Sharaa’s connections to jihadist factions that pose a risk to Israeli communities, particularly in the Golan Heights.
Wilson criticized Israeli assertions about its military operations as “totally contrived and misunderstood.” He stressed the importance of recognizing the true enemy, suggesting that Tehran, rather than Damascus, represents Israel’s primary threat.
“It’s so sad to me that they’re taking the eye off the enemy. The enemy is Khamenei and the enemy is the head of the snake, not Damascus. The head of the snake is Tehran,” he explained.
Wilson articulated that military actions opening the door for Iran to increasingly support groups like Hamas and Hezbollah could result in significant human loss within Israel. He conveyed his fears regarding the potential implications of misidentified threats.
Syria’s leadership has charged that Israel is sowing discord by striking in defense of the Druze, who have been embroiled in dangerous sectarian conflicts threatening Syria’s fragile stability.
Amid growing tensions, the United States is intensifying calls for de-escalation. The Trump administration has formally urged Israel to cease its military actions and redirect its efforts toward direct negotiations with Damascus. Special U.S. envoy Tom Barrack reportedly made several appeals to Ron Dermer, an adviser to Prime Minister Netanyahu, emphasizing the need for restraint. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized the airstrikes as a troubling and horrifying situation and expressed that the U.S. is deeply concerned about the escalating violence.
As of now, the Israeli defense ministry has not responded to requests for comment regarding the controversy surrounding these military operations.
