Conor Daly is set to make his mark at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Indianapolis 500, setting his sights firmly on victory. Winning this prestigious race would not only secure his place in racing history but also turn him into a hero in his home state of Indiana.
The longing for an Indiana-born champion runs deep, as it has been a staggering 85 years since an athlete from the state has triumphed in this iconic event. As he prepares to take the wheel of the No. 76 ampm-sponsored Chevrolet, Daly recalls the legacy of Wilbur Shaw, a three-time Indy 500 champion, while advocating for change in Indiana’s racing fortunes.
Daly proudly dons a helmet that pays homage to Shaw on race day, a symbol of his dedication to breaking the long-standing drought.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Daly expressed disbelief at the historical drought, stating, “It’s crazy, 85 years since the last Indy 500 winner from Indiana. That just seems wrong. It just seems sad. So we’ve got to change that.” He shared his creative process behind the helmet design, which features vintage images of Shaw’s car along with details from the 1940 race, the last time an Indiana driver claimed victory.
Daly achieved an impressive qualification position, securing 11th place on the starting grid. He positioned himself between Scott McLaughlin and Alexander Rossi, both of whom have previously won the race. Reflecting on his car’s speed, Daly reported an average qualifying speed of around 231 mph.
He confidently shared, “I feel really good. This is one of the best cars I’ve had in my IndyCar career here, and I know that’s a bold statement to say, but it’s truly been a pleasure to drive all week.” He expressed pride in matching his best starting position and emphasized that the team is ready for the challenge ahead.
Describing the rush of racing, Daly called driving at such high speeds “truly crazy.” He elaborated, “I don’t know why you wouldn’t watch what we’re doing here because it truly is crazy. We’re at that level where cars are flying through the air, crashing at a high level, because we are putting these things on the absolute ragged edge of control and that’s what it takes to win the biggest race out there.”
For many drivers, the Indianapolis 500 stands as the pinnacle of motorsport. Daly emphasized the unique significance of the race, stating, “It’s the biggest race that there is across motorsports. Some people like to argue that but physically, if you ask any racing drivers who have been around the sport for a long time, the Indy 500, that’s the big one. It’s crazy and what we’re doing out there is wild.”
For Daly, winning the Indy 500 would symbolize the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to his craft. He mentioned, “It’s why I wake up every morning,” capturing the essence of his passion for racing and the significance of the event. He has thought carefully about the tradition of drinking milk after the race, indicating that he has already chosen what he would drink if he wins.
“I’ve gone whole milk the last few years, but I haven’t won yet,” Daly said reflectively. “So, I decided to switch it up. We’re gonna go 2% because why not? Let’s pick something different and maybe that’ll get us the win.”
Fans can catch the Indianapolis 500 live on May 25, with coverage beginning at 10 a.m. ET on FOX. The excitement surrounding this iconic race continues to grow, as motorsport enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the thrilling journey that awaits on the track.
As Conor Daly takes the starting line, the hope and support of a state rest on his shoulders. With determination and skill, he aims not only for victory but also to inspire another generation of racers from Indiana.
