A Republican lawmaker is raising concerns after her son’s high school featured content promoting non-monosexual identities during its morning announcements. The segment aired as part of a student-run program focused on Bisexual Plus Awareness Week, prompting significant backlash.
Representative Ashley Hinson from Iowa took to social media platform X to express her discontent, calling the content shared in the segment “so bad and inappropriate” that she chose not to disseminate the original video.
Hinson articulated her concerns as both a mother and a legislator. She stated, “I am appalled that the school is promoting sexual content to minors. What administrators approved this content for the morning news program that is viewed by the entire student body? Why were parents not informed about this explicit content?” She emphasized her intention to seek an investigation through the Department of Education and collaborate with Governor Reynolds to ensure accountability, urging followers to stay tuned for developments.
The segment featured a student describing the purpose of Spectrum, the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) club, while discussing the significance of Bisexual Plus Awareness Week. The student explained that the term “plus” signifies inclusivity of various non-monosexual identities.
“Spectrum is close to wrapping up our celebration of Bisexual Plus Awareness Week,” the student stated. “Do you know what the plus stands for? It represents inclusivity of all non-monosexual identities. What does that mean? A non-monosexual identity refers to sexual orientations that are not strictly homosexual or heterosexual. This term encompasses multiple identities, including bisexual, pansexual, fluid, queer, and omnisexual.”
Furthermore, the student elaborated that non-monosexual identities emphasize the complexity of attraction, which does not conform to traditional binaries. The segment hinted at additional discussions on the subject scheduled for the following day.
In response to the controversy, Linn-Mar Community School District confirmed that it was aware of the segment and was undertaking a review of the situation. The district stated that it seeks to determine whether any policies or procedures were breached during the segment’s production or airing.
In a statement provided to Fox News Digital, the district mentioned, “We remain committed to fostering respectful dialogue and supporting all students and staff in a safe and inclusive environment in a manner that aligns with district guidelines and policies.”
Hinson, however, is not waiting for the district’s review to conclude. She has reached out to Education Secretary Linda McMahon, urging federal action to address what she describes as an infringement on parental rights at Linn-Mar High School.
“I write to highlight the egregious encroachment on parental rights at Linn-Mar High School, where my 14-year-old son attends school,” Hinson stated. She pointed out that, in addition to the September 25 broadcast, a similar announcement aired on September 23, where students were encouraged to use expressions like bisexual plus to support all non-monosexual identities.
Hinson voiced her astonishment that these segments were broadcast without parental knowledge or consent. She lamented, “As a parent and a legislator, I am appalled that a school would assume the role of teaching and promoting sexual identity to our children. Schools should focus on educating students, not indoctrinating them.”
The congresswoman also criticized the school for previously excluding parents from discussions regarding related topics. She implored the Department of Education to initiate a comprehensive investigation into this issue at Linn-Mar High School, emphasizing the necessity for parents to have a say in their children’s education and the conversation surrounding sexual identity.
