Could the NFL Draft Introduce a Lottery System Ahead of Arch Manning’s Anticipated Entry

As Arch Manning prepares for his junior season at Texas, he finds himself firmly in the spotlight. Many experts predict that he not only has a strong chance of winning the Heisman Trophy but may also emerge as the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

While it remains uncertain whether Manning will opt to turn professional next year, he holds the opportunity to do so since he will be three years removed from high school.

In light of this, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter advocates for the league to adopt a draft lottery similar to that of the NBA.

The NBA’s lottery system discourages teams from intentionally losing games to secure the first overall pick in the following year’s draft. Recently, discussions surrounding the Dallas Mavericks having a mere 1.8% chance of securing the first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft highlighted the ongoing debates about the efficacy of tanking.

Despite attempts by NBA teams to increase their chances of winning the first pick, Schefter acknowledges that the league’s decision to eliminate incentives for losing has been effective.

In an interview on ESPN Radio’s “Unsportsmanlike,” Schefter expressed his conviction about the need for a similar approach in the NFL. He pointed out, “The more I think about it, the more I think the NFL should be in that business. They don’t want teams to tank. They don’t want teams to lose.” Last season, there were situations that raised eyebrows, such as when the New England Patriots opted to play Joe Milton in a crucial game.

While it’s not definitive that the Patriots were attempting to lose, the circumstances suggested a lack of motivation to win in that scenario.

Interestingly, Milton did lead a surprising victory for the Patriots over the Buffalo Bills in Week 18, winning 23-16, although it’s essential to note that Buffalo rested many of its starters for upcoming playoffs.

Despite the controversy, Schefter’s proposition could resonate with fans and officials alike.

He noted that instituting a lottery system could potentially provide the NFL with an additional high-profile event: “If nothing else, if the NFL were able to implement a lottery system, they’d have one more night of ratings. They’re doing shows for everything else. Why would there not be a draft lottery show? That would rate huge.”

Imagine a high-stakes draft lottery broadcast featuring a star quarterback prospect or, specifically, Arch Manning. Such an event could draw significant viewership if scheduled in a primetime slot.

As the presumed starter for the Texas Longhorns in the 2025-26 college season, Manning’s performance will be closely monitored. With Quinn Ewers securing a draft spot with the Miami Dolphins, Manning has the chance to shine as he consolidates his role as the team’s leader.

In his limited appearances so far, Manning showcased glimpses of his talent, particularly during games when Ewers was sidelined or when Texas was significantly ahead. However, he has yet to steer the team through a full season.

Currently, Manning has not disclosed his plans regarding a potential entry into the 2026 NFL Draft.
