Passengers aboard a cruise ship have received warnings to turn off lights while sailing through waters identified as vulnerable to piracy. A TikTok user shared the alarming announcement, raising concerns among fellow travelers.
User @lillydapink, known as Lilly, documented her experience on the Cunard’s Queen Anne cruise ship as it made its way from Darwin, Australia, to Manila, Philippines. In a video posted online, the cruise ship announced enhanced security measures.
During the announcement, a crew member stated that the vessel would operate at an elevated security alert level during this passage. “We will be operating at a heightened level of security alertness during this period,” the crew member articulated over the ship’s intercom.
As darkness fell, the cruise line implemented strict lighting protocols. “During hours of darkness, only essential open deck lights will be on to reduce the ship’s external lighting,” the announcement continued. It urged passengers to turn off cabin lights and close curtains in staterooms.
This precaution aims to minimize visibility from outside, potentially deterring any unwanted attention from threats in the water. The crew further instructed that the ship’s external decks would remain closed overnight, restricting passengers’ movements outside.
Lilly, reflecting on her experience, reported to Fox News Digital that all outside lighting on upper decks had indeed been turned off. “The curtains and blinds were also closed to keep the ship as dark as possible,” she noted.
The TikTok video quickly garnered over half a million likes, prompting widespread discussion on social media about the unusual situation. Comments varied from humor to genuine fear, illustrating the diverse reactions among viewers.
One user lightheartedly wrote, “Bro my timbers would be shiveringggg,” while another chimed in, “The way I would crawl and hide under the bed.” This blend of humor and trepidation highlights the thin line between adventure and anxiety on such journeys.
Users voiced concerns about piracy, with one comment noting that if a cruise ship faced an attack, the response from naval vessels would be swift and decisive, more so than for a standard merchant ship. This sentiment reflects the prevailing fears regarding safety in regions known for piracy.
