Cuomo Criticizes NYC Mayoral Candidate Mamdani, Warns of Socialism’s Threat

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has called Zohran Mamdani “dangerous,” asserting that socialism could be the “death knell for New York City.” His remarks came during an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures.”

The current mayoral candidates’ positions highlight the significant political divide within the Democratic Party that has escalated since Donald Trump regained the presidency last year. Cuomo spoke out against what he describes as an increasing leftist ideology within the party, particularly through candidates like Mamdani.

Internal Divisions Within the Democratic Party

Cuomo tied Mamdani closely to other self-identified democratic socialists, like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, both of whom have publicly endorsed Mamdani’s campaign. He stated that this internal debate within the party is not surprising.

Cuomo pointed out that political primaries often attract the most fervent voters, which in this case, he claims, consists largely of young socialists. He noted that Mamdani successfully mobilized younger voters, facilitated by socialist organizations that provided volunteers and funding.

Concerns over the General Election Electorate

As Cuomo campaigns as an independent candidate, having lost to Mamdani during the Democratic primary in June, he emphasized that the electorate for the general election differs significantly. He stated that the typical New York City voter does not align with socialist ideals.

“New Yorkers are not socialists. They do not oppose business or corporations. What they want are jobs and growth,” Cuomo asserted.

Criticism of Mamdani’s Policies

Cuomo criticized Mamdani’s progressive policies, which include ambitious plans for free public transportation, no-cost healthcare, and city-run grocery stores. Mamdani intends to finance these proposals by significantly increasing taxes on the wealthiest residents and corporations.

His campaign calls for raising the corporate tax rate to 11.5% and taxing the wealthiest 1% of New Yorkers by an additional 2%. Cuomo expressed skepticism over the feasibility of this plan, insisting that New York corporations and individuals already face high tax rates.

“It would be a death knell for New York City, and frankly, he is dangerous for our city,” Cuomo warned about Mamdani’s policies.

Cuomo’s Pro-Growth Development Strategy

Cuomo articulated his commitment to a pro-growth development strategy aimed at fostering a business-friendly environment. He underscored the need to attract new businesses to New York City while also supporting existing ones. The former governor noted that significant numbers of businesses have relocated from the city in recent years.

A recent study indicated that 158 companies managing approximately $993 billion in assets moved their headquarters out of New York between 2020 and 2023. This trend, according to Cuomo, highlights the urgency of revitalizing the city’s economy.

Addressing Public Safety and Housing Needs

In addition to fostering economic development, Cuomo expressed concerns about public safety and affordable housing. He acknowledged that crime remains a pressing issue, influenced by the recent push to defund police departments across the nation, including New York City.

According to his campaign plans, Cuomo aims to increase the New York Police Department’s force by adding 5,000 new officers, with a specific focus on enhancing patrols in subway systems through the addition of 1,500 officers.

Cuomo also highlighted the need for affordable housing solutions, proposing the construction of 50,000 new housing units each year to help meet the city’s demand. “This will help augment the supply and respond to the existing need,” he stated.

Awaiting Response from Mamdani’s Campaign

Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani for a response to Cuomo’s critical comments. As of now, no immediate response has been received.

As the mayoral campaign progresses, tensions between the candidates are expected to rise. The electorate appears to be at a crossroads, balancing aspirations for progressive reforms against the desire for a stable, business-oriented future.
