The Daily Beast has publicly apologized to Melania Trump and retracted a controversial article that alleged her introduction to President Donald Trump occurred through a modeling agent linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
This retraction follows significant scrutiny on the outlet’s editorial standards. Initially published in July, the article was met with a legal challenge from Melania Trump’s attorney, who contested both its headline and framing. The Daily Beast took the story down, acknowledging shortcomings in their reporting.
In a formal statement released on Monday, which Melania Trump shared on X, also known as Twitter, the publication stated, “The Daily Beast recently published a story headlined ‘Melania Trump ‘Very Involved’ in Epstein Scandal: Author’ based on an interview with Michael Wolff. Upon reflection, we have determined that the article did not meet our standards and has therefore been removed from our platforms.”
Furthermore, the statement clarified that a portion of an episode of The Daily Beast Podcast, named ‘Trump’s Epstein Scandal Can’t Stop Won’t Stop,’ which referenced the first lady, has also been eliminated. The Daily Beast continued, “The first lady points to her bestselling book Melania as the definitive account of her life story. We apologize to the first lady and our readers.”
Journalist Michael Wolff originally made these allegations during a conversation with Joanna Coles, the chief content officer of The Daily Beast, for the podcast. Wolff claimed that Melania Trump was significantly involved in the alleged Epstein relationship, stating, “There is this model thing, and she’s introduced by a model agent, both of whom Trump and Epstein are involved with. She’s introduced to Trump that way, Epstein knows her well.”
Wolff’s comments sparked immediate backlash, especially considering his history within the journalistic community. Known for his controversial reporting style, he has previously dealt with credibility concerns among peers. In July, when approached for comments about the fallout from his statements, Wolff distanced himself from the article’s claims, expressing that he played no role in its composition.
Even before this incident, Wolff’s reporting style invited skepticism. His book titled ‘Fire and Fury,’ which scrutinizes Trump’s presidency, faced multiple critiques for allegedly misrepresenting quotes and events. During an interview in 2018, he insinuated that President Trump was having an affair, claiming evidence existed within the pages of his book. This led to speculation about various individuals, with then-UN Ambassador Nikki Haley notably caught in the crossfire.
Haley reacted vehemently to such implications, characterizing them as “disgusting” and “highly offensive.” In another instance from the same interview, Wolff maintained that he never claimed Haley was involved with Trump, stirring further controversy. Co-host Mika Brzezinski of
