In a pivotal move, Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones indicated on Monday that the team is focused on enhancing depth at the quarterback position during the upcoming NFL Draft.
Quarterback Dak Prescott has faced significant challenges, suffering injuries in two of the last five seasons. This situation has created concerns for the Cowboys regarding their backup options at quarterback. While Cooper Rush, Trey Lance, and Andy Dalton have filled in during Prescott’s absences, neither has proven to be a long-term solution. When Prescott is healthy, the Cowboys are a force to be reckoned with, consistently performing as one of the top teams in the NFL. Between 2021 and 2023, they secured at least 12 wins each season.
Jones, presently attending the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, stated that the development of a young quarterback to back Prescott is a priority for the organization.
“One of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft,” Jones remarked, as reported by the Dallas Morning News. “The exact timing for that is uncertain, but it is on our radar.”
He continued, “That’s why we made a move to acquire Trey Lance. It seems like quarterbacks, even those we envision as fourth-round picks, always go much higher than anticipated.”
In 2023, the Cowboys made a strategic decision by acquiring Lance from the San Francisco 49ers. However, he played a minimal role during his time in Dallas. Cooper Rush, who joined the team in 2017, has served as the QB2 for much of his tenure and even had a brief stint with the New York Giants in 2020.
The necessity for a solid backup quarterback is paramount, particularly given Prescott’s injury history. Teams often fail to account for the volatility of injuries in the NFL, and the Cowboys must be prepared to handle this situation more effectively. Investing in a young talent could serve the Cowboys well in both the short and long term.
The upcoming draft is set to feature a number of promising quarterbacks that college football audiences are likely familiar with. Among them, Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward are projected to be selected within the first six picks. Other players, such as Jalen Milroe, Kyle McCord, Jaxson Dart, Quinn Ewers, and Riley Leonard, are also anticipated to be available for the Cowboys to consider.
As the Cowboys prepare for the draft, the prospect of securing a young quarterback is becoming increasingly appealing. The organization understands the critical importance of having a solid backup plan, especially with Prescott’s history. This strategy will not only address immediate needs but also build a robust long-term framework for the team’s offense.
Furthermore, the Cowboys must remain vigilant to capitalize on the draft’s evolving landscape. Player performances at the combine and pro days will undoubtedly influence their decisions. The front office must weigh all options, considering the unique skill sets each potential draftee brings to the table.
Incorporating a young quarterback into the mix can invigorate the team’s dynamics. It encourages competition among players and may lead to unforeseen breakthroughs. If the Cowboys can draft a rising star, it could elevate the team’s overall performance and foster a culture of excellence.
In addition, developing a relationship between Prescott and a rookie quarterback will be essential. An effective mentorship can help ensure a smooth transition should situations necessitate a change at the quarterback position. Keeping a talented quarterback in the wings also adds an extra layer of strategy for head coach Mike McCarthy.
The upcoming draft not only presents an opportunity for the Dallas Cowboys to bolster their roster but also showcases their forward-looking strategy. By addressing quarterback depth, the organization displays a commitment to continuous improvement, an essential aspect of competing at the highest level.
As fans eagerly anticipate the draft, the Cowboys are poised to make significant moves that could shape the future of the franchise. With the right choices and strong performances from prospects during the evaluation process, the team may find the crucial depth they need to secure a stronger position in future seasons.
The storyline is set, and the Dallas Cowboys are ready to take decisive action in the draft. The upcoming decisions will not only affect the current roster but may also lay the groundwork for a promising future.
