Nearly a month has passed since Daniel Comeaux was appointed as the new police chief of Dallas, Texas. Comeaux is implementing a fresh approach to immigration enforcement that diverges from the policies of his predecessor while aligning with state sanctuary initiatives.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Comeaux emphasized the importance of cooperation with federal agencies, stating, “We are going to do what is right. We will always be available to assist our federal partners.” This stance marks a significant shift in the Dallas Police Department’s approach to immigration law enforcement.

Comeaux clarified the department’s role by saying, “If a federal agency is conducting an operation and requires our support, we will be there to assist, provided they operate within legal and respectful boundaries. The Dallas Police Department will support lawful actions.” His comments reflect a commitment to maintaining law enforcement standards while addressing community safety concerns.

Support from Leadership in Dallas

Comeaux’s approach is backed by Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, who previously expressed support for President Donald Trump’s agenda to deport undocumented immigrants with violent criminal histories. In an interview, Johnson remarked, “Of course, we would support efforts to remove individuals illegally residing in our country who pose a threat due to their violent criminal records.”

Johnson’s leadership has coincided with Texas’s stringent measures against illegal immigration, particularly under the Biden administration. The state has mobilized resources to the border with Mexico and has bused migrants to Democrat-led cities, aiming to spotlight the ongoing issue of illegal immigration.

Since taking office in 2019, Mayor Johnson has garnered attention for switching from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party, which he articulated in a Wall Street Journal op-ed titled “American cities need Republicans.” This significant political pivot has made headlines as he champions a tough-on-crime agenda in Dallas.

Crime Reduction and Law Enforcement Focus

Under Johnson’s leadership, Dallas has experienced a noted drop in crime rates since 2019. According to the Associated Press, it stands out as the largest city in the United States led by a Republican mayor. Johnson attributes the city’s success in combating crime to effective governance, which includes a strong police chief, a focus on public safety in budgeting, and community collaboration.

“Mayor Johnson has prioritized public safety, resulting in four consecutive years of declining violent crime rates in Dallas,” the mayor’s office stated, highlighting the effectiveness of their collaborative approach.

While Johnson’s views on immigration enforcement align closely with Comeaux’s new policies, they differ significantly from those of former Dallas Police Department Interim Chief Michael Igo. Igo had previously insisted that his department would not report individuals living in the country illegally who sought assistance by calling 911, stating, “The Dallas Police Department is not in the business of assisting federal agencies with biometric detentions or deportations.”

New Directions under Chief Comeaux

Comeaux, who has a robust background in federal law enforcement, intends to reshape the Dallas Police Department’s engagement with immigration issues. He clarified, “While aligning ourselves with the law, we will not initiate actions against individuals based on their immigration status. If we identify anyone lacking legal status, we will reach out to the appropriate federal agencies to address the situation.”

His aggressive stance on crime is complemented by the implementation of a camera surveillance system throughout Dallas. Comeaux stated, “We have extensive camera systems in place, which allows us to monitor activities across the city effectively. Anyone committing crimes should be aware that we are watching and will respond accordingly.”

Comeaux’s commitment to community safety includes explicit warnings to those contemplating unlawful actions. He proclaimed, “This city will not tolerate any form of violence. If you have intentions to disrupt order, choose another city. We are committed to protecting Dallas and its residents.”

Reflecting on his career journey that brought him back to local law enforcement, Comeaux recalled, “The early days of my career as a Houston police officer always inspired me. I remember being able to make a real difference in people’s lives, and that motivates me to serve and protect Dallas effectively.”
