In a communication directed to the Dartmouth community, Beilock articulated her position, stating, “Receivership, censorship, and external pressures about what can and cannot be taught or studied hamper the free exchange of ideas on our campus and across institutions. Dartmouth will never relent on these values.”
Yale professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld openly criticized Beilock for her decision not to align Dartmouth with the coalition supporting Harvard. He labeled her actions as a combination of cowardice and hypocrisy, declaring, “This is Trump’s classic playbook: divide and conquer.” Many scholars are questioning the implications of her neutrality.
When asked about the backlash, Beilock responded, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion. People ask, ‘Why aren’t you suing Trump like Harvard?’ Well, [the Administration hasn’t] made those kinds of demands.” Her approach emphasizes maintaining academic integrity while addressing the administration’s policies.
As federal scrutiny intensifies, President Donald Trump has targeted federal funding to Ivy League institutions in light of investigations into anti-Israel protests. Notably, only Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania were exempted from these funding suspensions.
