Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy announced that the company’s new collaboration with FOX Sports signifies a pivotal change from previous partnerships, one that appears to seamlessly align with their brand identity. This new venture marks an optimistic progression for both entities.
In a candid discussion, Portnoy recounted past efforts to collaborate with major media outlets, notably a deal with ESPN that he deemed unsuccessful. He admitted that those early attempts did not resonate well with the Barstool ethos.
“When we struck the deal with ESPN, it felt like they had a sour taste in their mouth whenever they looked at me,” Portnoy shared during an interview on Fox & Friends. “They wanted nothing to do with Barstool. They were embarrassed by it.”
Contrasting those earlier experiences, Portnoy expressed excitement about Barstool’s new partnership with FOX Sports. He described the relationship as a welcoming and supportive endeavor.
“FOX Sports is the exact opposite,” he stated. “They embrace everything we do. They understand why people appreciate us. They are essentially going to be a true partner.”
The collaboration brings Barstool personalities, including Portnoy and Dan “Big Cat” Katz, into the forefront of FOX Sports programming. Portnoy is set to join the cast of “Big Noon Kickoff” this fall, where he will focus on covering college football, particularly highlighting his alma mater.
“I’m going to be on the road every single week with these guys,” he said enthusiastically. “It’s about time Michigan gets represented. Given that we run the conference, it’s only natural to have an alumni involved.”
In addition to the college football coverage, Portnoy announced his participation in a new Monday show on FOX Sports 1. The partnership also includes plans for a dedicated Barstool studio to be constructed in Chicago, signaling an exciting phase of growth.
“Our cast of characters will feature prominently in this new venture,” he noted.
Portnoy emphasized that FOX Sports genuinely desires to capture the unique essence of Barstool. They aim to highlight what makes Barstool appealing, characterized by a diverse ensemble of personalities working together to entertain and engage audiences.
“FOX Sports really wanted the Barstool feel,” he remarked. “They are interested in the dynamic where you have a bunch of characters just trying to make people laugh.”
Looking forward, Portnoy expressed his enthusiasm about the potential growth and opportunities this partnership will create for both fan bases. He believes it represents a significant new chapter for Barstool Sports.
“This is a totally new chapter for us,” he said with fervor. “We’ve never partnered with a network this substantial, one that possesses so many resources and talent as FOX Sports, which is genuinely invested in us.”
“They’re just as excited about this as we are,” he added. “So, the sky’s the limit.”
